Hello,  I am new to this group and hoping someone can advise me on what to do about a hospital referral ..

I went to the Dr's at the beginning of January to have a breast lump checked out after finding it because I had arrange sensations in my left breast for quite a few months .. these included a feeling of pressure , tingling , a sensation of blood pumping hard all in the same spot and a few incidents of quite intense pain .These symptoms prompted me to check and I felt a hard pea sized lump in the same region .  I have had cysts in the past but this feels different  ,fixed and not tender.  The Dr referred me on a 2 week wait referral.  The hospital have said that there is a longer wait than this due to Xmas and a high number of referrals so it will be longer before I get an appointment.. Since talking to the hospital, I have now noticed that my lymph nodes in my armpit on  the same side as my breast issues are raised and have swelling on my neck and collarbone This has been for about a week and they haven't gone down yet.  Please can anyone advise if having new symptoms would expedite my referral or if  wouldn't make any difference?  I don't want to be a drama queen but my swollen lymph nodes have made me a little more concerned about the possibility that my lump may not be a cyst like before ... Thank you for any help x

  • Hello LAD

I've been down this road three times and it has never been longer than two weeks.

You need to get back to your GP. They can speed things up if necessary.

Three times! What did I do?

  • Hi there

If I were in your position, I would contact my GP and report the new symptoms. I'm not sure if it would expedite the referral or not, but you never know, and at the very least it's noted on your record.

Hope this helps and wishing you the best possible outcome for this.

    • You need to go back to GP and ask them to chase the referral.  There is a clear Gold Standard guideline that anyone with suspicious symptoms referred to cancer clinic by GP must have been seen by a clinician within 14 days.  Further ask if there is another hospital cancer centre near you where you could be switched to and seen sooner!
  • Hi, yes definitely go back and tell Dr of new symptoms. When I was waiting for a referral, I called the booking team every morning at 9am to see if they had a cancellation I could fill. And that worked for me. But I do live close to the hospital and could be there in 20 minutes. They also had a cancellation list and they put my name on it. For people they can contact at short notice, this was Rotherham. So worth asking. And don't think your pestering them because if you get a cancellation then that one appointment not gone to waste. Good luck Fingers crossed
