Severe bruising after biopsy

Hello

I had multiple biopsies done on 5.1.2026.  my poor breast and lymph nodes area is a pain cushion and covered with dressings.

However it is sooo painful.  I've kept the dressings on still (darent take them off because I had a bleed) but when the Consultant Radiographer did one of the biopsies she made a big thing about pressing on an area which had started bruising.

I showed my daughter my site yesterday and she commented there is a large dark purple bruise near two of the biopsy sites.

It really hurts including down my arm and around my back!

I am not sure whether to contact the breast team at hospital (I have a Consultant appointment on 16th Jan 2026) or contact GP to them to check everything is as ok as it can be.

I'm taking paracetamol  ibuprofen 4 times a day (I have other health issues as well)

  • Hi, I would go to the GP first. These biopsies can cause soreness and bruising. It doesn’t help that you are feeling anxious waiting for your appointment. They might ( depending on what is there) advise applying some gentle warmth to aid healing, but see what they say first. Gentle heat might help your back too.

  • I was surprised by how sore the biopsy area was on my breast- 3 separate cores taken from the small area that the consultant said was very concerning. It hurt more and for longer than subsequent lump and lymph node removal scars. Maybe that’s the difference  between the effects from a hollow needle and a sharp scalpel Shrug tone2‍♀️

I had left hospital with instructions to take paracetamol, but I did add some ibuprofen too.
    All the best xxx

  • Same! I had five samples taken on the core needle biopsy and the level of swelling, pain and bruising was very surprising. The subsequent lumpectomy site has been nowhere near as bad.

Just an aside, is your username a mashup of "cynical" & "optimist"?

  • Yes it is, I had it already, though now on other sites I prefer to post with my actual name these days. I feel fairly optimistic over my treatment for cancer, but anything to do with what’s happening otherwise has turned me increasingly cynical!

  • Love it! It basically sums up my approach to most things.
