Hi everyone

I had a lumpectomy for a 4cm tumour and lymph node removal. I was diagnosed with lobular cancer nearly 3 years ago.  I had radiotherapy, zometa infusions and the dreaded letrozole.  I have been okay so far apart from joint pain which I can live with but for the last 4 few months I have really bad upper back pain, continuous aches in armpit and a tenderness where my scar is..my ribs are tender too.  I have had a bone scan and ultrasound on my breast and all was clear.  I'm being told this is normal and possibly this will not now go away.

I would like to ask if anyone else has or had similar and what you are doing to cope with the 24/7 pain.

Thanks for listening......

  • Here we have a physio attached to the cancer unit but all he does is assess and give exercises, sadly!
oh and I did a stretch and mobility class at our local gym yesterday and my mx arm felt it!

  • Hi I'm 11 yrs on, now off letrozole but as got a brand I could cope with the joint pain was ok, ie I had to have Accord brand nothing else. My breast scar still hurts, and part of boob, don't get rib pain but have had rashes which apparently is chemo, the gift that random keeps on giving, with random stuff that comes and then goes away,

  • It must be awful for you..... Nearly 3 years on I would never have expected such discomfort and they don't tell you about it and my last appointment they were quite dismissive.  I am on accord brad of letrozole which hasn't really settled down yet but 7 years to go!!!

    Take care x

  • Hi, So glad I saw this message as I am 6 years in now. Had a double mastectomy and some lymph nodes removed  on the left side and radiotherapy and the dreaded letrozole with another year to go on that. On the side with the lymph node removal I have always had on and off pain in the back of my shoulder and tightness in the scar area which can be painful. Always a worry in case it's something sinister again, so pleased in a way to hear that it seems to be a common problem after the treatments. I do have a pulley system that I use for exercise which the physio gave me after I went to get checked out a few years ago as i was concerned. I try to remain positive and see the discomfort as a small price to pay for still being here to tell the tale.

    Best wishes everyone

  • I’m 2 yrs post lumpectomy & radio on left side. 3 months ago I developed a cough & 2 weeks later a deep, intermittent stabbing pain in the left shoulder blade, which I initially thought was due to the cough. Another 2 weeks & I told my gp I was worried because my mum died from bone & lung secondaries. XR was normal but it didn’t explain why I still had the pain ( cough eased but not completely gone). He sent me for CT scan, awaiting results. Only now have I realised it could be late effects of radiotherapy. I also had a sports massage 3 weeks ago & felt initial relief. I think I might continue with that.

edit- I’m still awaiting ct results( 12 days) but I’m now at the stage where I’m thinking they would have contacted me by now if there was any bone involvement. After doing a deep dive into possible causes, I’m leaning towards nerve pain, possibly caused by radiotherapy to under arm. I already take gabapentin for neuropathy in legs but I’ve deliberately been reducing it lately. I will now increase it to see if it helps. I’m also considering trying a version of CBD as my stress levels are high right now ( have a mouth full f ulcers and feel really fatigued). I don’t like this feeling as I feel as if I should be ecstatic that my initial cancer treatment was successful.

Update- CT scan was negative for any bone involvement. It has shown a problem with my bronchioles which is probably what caused the cough. Seems like the pain is just a coincidental side effect of radiotherapy.
