Need advice, please

Hi all

I am going back to the hospital, on Thursday, to get the results and the biopsy, I had taken, on 13th November.

They will also discuss a plan, for me. I believe they did say it would be an op and maybe then radiotherapy.

. My question is:

I have a cruise booked for 30 May, 2026.

Can anyone give me any idea as to whether they think i will feel up to it, going on a cruise. The consultant said, when I asked, that that might just be what I need, to make me feel better, but I would like the advice of anyone who has actually been through the ordeal, themselves.

Any advice would be welcome. Also how would I put it on the travel insurance.

Thank you all

  • Hi, here is an honest point of view as I'm going through it now and to start off I was told the same plan. I think the trouble is, until they do the op and see if it's in the lymph nodes or not you will not know how long your full treatment will take. It was unfortunate that for me it was in lymph nodes so I was diagnosed in April had to have 2nd op to clear nodes and now on chemo. Looks like will be a full year from diagnosis to treatment end. If there all clear I was told 6-8 weeks after op I would have started radiotherapy. I hope this gives you a Idea of time frames. But this is just my point of view, every one is different. But I wish someone had out lined it for me from the start. Best wishes. Xxxxxx

  • It's very difficult to know a. How you'll react to treatment and b. How things will develop. No one here knows your details eg type of cancer and your post is confusing.  You haven't had the results of the biopsy but treatment is planned...Put what's going on on the Travel Insurance or contact them for advise.

  • Hi

I agree with Louise53 in that you won't definitely know what your treatment plan looks like until you've had surgery and the results from that and the sentinel lymph node (SLNB) biopsy are back.

I was initially told that I'd have surgery followed by radiotherapy, but traces of cancer were found in one of the lymph nodes they removed which meant that I had chemotherapy in between surgery and radiotherapy. This meant that my treatment from start to finish lasted 10 months. If that is the same for you then you'd still be having treatment when you're due to go on your cruise.

To answer your question about what to tell your travel insurers, I'd wait until you get your biopsy results back so you know what treatment is planned. You can then call to inform them. They may increase your premium or, unfortunately, decline to continue your insurance. If the latter, please join us over in the travel insurance group where you'll find recommendations from others who've got travel insurance when they've had a cancer diagnosis.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Sorry if I confused anyone. I have breast cancer and I felt the lump on 31st Oct, and had a face to face, with consultant, having just had the mammogram and ultra scan done. That was on 13th Nov. It was when i went back in, to the room,  to see the consultant, again, after the biopsy was done, that she said that they would probably operate and then I would have radiotherapy. She was only looking at the results, then, of the scans, just done.  Obviously they wouldn't decide, for sure, until the actual results were back in. They did say, however, that the cancer had not gone to the lymph nodes.

I get the actual results, on 27th Nov

I hope that is clearer, now, sorry. Thank you

  • Thanks for giving further information.

Can I ask how they know there are no cancer cells in your lymph nodes if they haven't done a SLNB yet?

  • Thank you for that valuable advice. I will keep that all in mind. I was only going by what the consultant had said, my husband was there, too and heard her say the same thing. But it does sound feasible, the advice and facts you have given,  so thank you, again, I appreciate

  • Just going by what the lady who did the scan said, the consultant, also

  • Hi Countrylass3f0303 , I really hope everything they have said at this early stage works. But keep an open mind as things can twist and turn. Some cancer in the lymph nodes cant be seen on scans but they pick it up once they do a node biopsy. But hay one step at a time. In 5 days you will be another step forward to a clear picture. Also Wright down your questions for that next meeting. Don't be afraid to ask " how do you know this" or " I heard some don't show on scans so how do you know it's clear" I take my husband and my sister in with me and we go through all the things I want to know so if I get overwhelmed one of them will pick up the questions. You are doing fantastic so far, just by reaching out on here is such a positive thing. I hope you will keep us updated on how you get on. I've got everything crossed for you. Sending positive vibes xxxxxxxx

  • I shall keep everything crossed that the diagnosis you've been given stays the same and that you can enjoy your cruise.

    ((hugs))

  • I am sorry, I am so naive about all this. All I know is that having attended the clinic on 13th Nov, they did a mammogram and a ultra scan, then a biopsy. The lady that did the biopsy said that it hadn't attached to the lymph nodes.

The Consultant repeated this, too. The Consultant told me what she thought the plan would be, and worked it out that although tight for time, I should be ok, for the cruise and "just what I would probably need as part of the healing process"

Now I have my next appointment to see her, again, with the biopsy results hopefully back, so she can either confirm that plan, or change it to fit the results.
