Hi.
I have been booked in for a mammogram and MRI scan next Monday. This has been booked in because I’m on the high risk list due to brca gene.
However I am still undergoing radiotherapy and wondered whether anyone had these scans during radiotherapy. Google comes up with different info, one saying it can affect the results of the scan making it look like a tumour is there and should be done a certain period after radiotherapy has finished.
The scans have been requested by my genetics team rather than my oncologist so they donor know I’m mid radiotherapy as it was delayed.
Do you think I should speak to my oncologist about postponing it or will it be ok? Just wondered whether anyone else had these scans during radiotherapy?
Hi Sparkle498uk , I would query it. When I was having radiotherapy the very thought of a mammogram would have made me cringe. I was only 10 weeks post surgery and towards the end of my 3 weeks of rads, the skin under the operated breast got very red, and looked like it might split. Thankfully it didn’t. My nipple was also extremely sore. So I would not have wanted all the pulling to get me into the mammogram plates (I’m small breasted so it takes quite a lot of ‘handling’ to get them in between the clamps!.) And the squashing would have been very painful. It sounds like the team requesting the mammogram don’t know your stage of treatment. Maybe the MRI might be ok? I haven’t had one but I don’t think it involves compression? But obviously I’m not a medic so this is all just what I feel I’d do in your situation. And I can’t remember when you had your surgery, maybe not so recently? I’d definitely query it with either or both teams, especially with regard to the information you’ve found out about possibly affecting the results of the scans. I can’t comment on that.
Sorry you’ve got this to deal with now. How is the radiotherapy going?
Love and hugs, HFxx
Thank you. Yes you make good points, I’m going to query it with oncology I think.
Radiotherapy going ok, has my fourth session this morning. 11 more to go! Tomorrow they are servicing the equipment so I have a day off!
