Hi there, am new here Wave I was told in June, following mammogram I had breast cancer. I didn't get the biopsy that day as I was on my own and scared. It was booked for the following week, had a friend attend with me, Dr refused to do it, as having allergies incase I had a reaction to the anaesthetic. Rang consultants secretary, asked her to ask consultant what I do? They rang, booked me the following week, friend came with me again, this time consultant said no to biopsy till have allergy tests. Had to wait weeks, saw allergy consultant, said don't test for anaesthetic, should be ok. Breast consultant asked to see me for a chat, I did, he asked me to get it done then, I said if had been mentioned, id have brought my friend, thought I'd be rebooked. I'd had in June, or the weeks since 5 people including him tell twice, I have cancer, he then said he needs to make sure it's cancer! Everybody told me need biopsy to find out type and grade, now he said to find out if is? Also have letter, signed by him stating it's cancer too! I've been told to put in a complaint about him. But it's 12 weeks this week since diagnosis and still not had biopsy, he stated if I didn't have it that day, no more he can do and is signing me off from his clinic. Any advice? Thank you in advance.

  • Hi there, it sounds like you really have had a difficult time.  If the consultant refuses to see you then maybe it's an idea to go to your GP and ask them for advice on how to proceed.   You can always seek advice from the team here at Macmillan, the number is 0800 808 0000 and they are open 8am to 8pm each day. Best wishes

  • Thank you for your reply,I am extremely  greatful. I have an appointment with my GP next week, so will go from there.

  • Just a little update on my situation. GP had nothing saying consultant has signed me off, so would contact them. I received a letter last week stating this, assume my GP had too, nearly a month after I saw the consultant and after my GP had contacted them!!

I have also, upon advice, contacted my local PALS, whom have stated that I have grounds for a formal complaint against the consultant, they mentioned the tone of the original letter and the latest are very different.

It is now coming into my 15th week since diagnosis and still no biopsy either, so will need to be referred back for that!!

Had some fabulous advice from a Macmillan clinical nurse specialist too, they are worth their weight in gold!!
