Hi all
i have recently just finished NAC for triple negative breast cancer and am due to have surgery next week. They ran some bloods for the pre op and I was suprised to find out that my vitamin B12 levels are very high. I’ve done the worst thing and googled and read a lot of stuff about elevated B12 and the links to secondary cancer and liver cancer and have scared myself silly. Did this happen to anyone else after chemo and if so did your levels eventually go back to normal?
thank you x
Hi Lis25
My own cancer was endometrial and I had chemo in 2022. I know that post chemo a lot of levels of things in my blood came back as off but gradually settled with time.
During chemo and also throughout my cancer journey I had many blood tests and was told that fluctuations can be normal and that particularly during chemo were expected. Where treatment was needed I was given supplements and retested. Although it is scary when a blood test throws up a concern I would be reassured that your team are regularly monitoring you and that they would do further tests if they felt it an issue.
Googling can be scary but understandable. I know that I did when I first had my diagnosis and scared myself silly. The issue is that the information is not specific to you and your diagnosis and medical history. It can be inaccurate and out of date. I think with me it was tempting to search for an individual concern and it was not the whole picture.
I would recommend discussing with your BCN/consultant but in the meantime you could consider giving the Macmillan Support Line a call and asking one of the nurses about the vitamin B12 levels. They should be able to give you the answers you need.
I wish you well for your surgery next week and hope your recovery goes well. In the meantime if there is anything you need then do please ask.
Jane
Hey! I had my pre op bloods yesterday and my b12 levels are also super high at 1679!!! I’m shocked as I’ve always had low b12 and not taking supplements for that either. I stupidly googled and now I’m worried about it! What level was yours and have you spoke to oncologist about your results yet? X
Hey. Thank you so much for your message. So they didn’t actually tell me the levels but just said very high and I was too afraid to ask what they were lol. They just told me to focus on surgery and getting better for now and in a few months time ask for the bloods to be repeated. I don’t have a phone call due with my oncologist until 6th October so I will be mentioning it then. I’m sorry your levels were high too and understand the anxiety it causes. I’ve been getting leg pain too so naturally have told myself it’s spread to my bones. Did you have chemo first too? If it helps, I did come across something online that basically said that chemo can cause false positives/ high vitamin b12 in the blood when in actual fact you are deficient so I’m hoping this is the case. I will try and dig out the article for you. I also found some other posts of different forums of other women whose levels were high after chemo but then returned to normal a few months later so that helped. I hope this helps you too.
I really hope all goes well with your surgery.
lisa
Yeah I had chemo first. I also read about that and read the forum about the ladies who said it returned to normal after 6months so I’m going to ask to repeat it after I’ve recovered from surgery and fingers crossed it’s back to normal . Having surgery 1st October than oncologist app 20th October so I’ll mention it then! Thank you, hope your surgery goes well or has gone well if you’ve already had it x
