Hello Everyone

I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer HER 2 Positive in 2020 had was on Tamoxifen, I was just post menopausal but as I work full time and on time own asked for Tamoxifen as was worried about joint paint with Letrozole.  I found one brand of Taxmoxifen suited me well and stayed on it for 4 years.  I then started worrying and maybe that I should transfer to Letrozole.  I was prescribed Exemestane as there are more options of lactose free, I have been on this for 6 months with a different brand each month, joint pain and tingling in fingers was awful plus joints really puffed up and I couldn't wear any rings plus put weight on around my middle.  I guess due to the steroid in it.  Its mainly my hands that suffer but I really recommend spraying magnesium on at night as it does ease it.

As I want to give everything to this and not return I am going to try Letrozole, I am staying positive about it.  Has anyone else moved from one drug to the other? I seem to have had varied advice as to whether I have 2 weeks off before starting the new drug or can carry on - would be interested to hear anyones thoughts on this please?

Keep staying strong.

  • Hi. I went from Letrozole to Exemestane after 9 months as I found the side effects from Letrozole were awful - fatigue, joint pain, low mood, flushes. I'm better on Exemestane but still have some fatigue and joint pain but as my thyroid has been affected too it could be that too that's causing the fatigue and I had mild arthritis before all this which has been made worse since being on Letrozole. I didn't have a break between them as the oncologist said to just start them as soon as possible.

    Take care. x

  • Hi

Thank you so much that’s really helped.  I will start Letrozole without taking a break.  I am concerned about side effects as everyone says about the joint pain.  I may end up having to swap back but will how it goes.  Good luck on Exemestane, my tiredness comes and goes but get awfulness pins and needles in my hands.  I count myself lucky & stay positive as someone is always worse off.

    really appreciate you replying. X

  • Hopefully you'll be ok on them. Fingers crossed

I'm on a trial of an app/ website to track side effects and record them in the form of a graph which has really helped me realise that although the side effects are still there, it goes in waves.  X

  • Hi, I was diagnosed October 2022. My oncologist put me on Letrozole after a few months I stopped taking it. The bone pain was unbearable, I was then changed to Tamoxifen and persevered with that for about 18 months, it caused thickness in the lining of my womb and I ended up having two hospital procedures to have a biopsy taken to rule out cancer. The pelvic pain I had throughout was not pleasant. I’m now on Exemestane and have been for about 4 months. I now get pain in my shins and feet, especially at night when I’m trying to sleep. I don’t know if Exemestane is the cause or not. I have another 3 years to go on this and don’t really want to change to anything else and to be honest I’m not sure there are anymore alternatives.

thank you for your support, I start tomorrow on Letrozole, I got pain on Exemestane plus a lot of sleepless nights.  I use a magnesium spray from Holland and Barrett at night and sometimes in the day to help with joint pain which does help.  I also have to move about & not sit to long otherwise do stiff. Let’s all keep positive.
