Letrozole- when did you get it?

Hi. I have been told by chemo nurse today that letrozole will be prescribed by my GP. My oncologist initially said the first batch would be issued by the chemo ward.

I’m not too bothered at the moment as chemo still in system for a while (last one was today) but thinking after that there is no protection so want to be on that letrozole asap.

When did everyone get their first batch? Should I call GP tomorrow do you think? I’ve never been in long term medication so don’t know how it works with repeat prescriptions etc.

Thank you everyone.

  • Hi Sparkle498uk,

Are you post menopausal or pre? I was premenopausal so when I finished my chemo in Dec I had my first Zoladex injection in January and on the second zoladex injection one a month later I started Letrozole i'm assuming so they knew I was in the menopause by then. I had the first batch issued by oncology and then the GP. The GP should receive a letter from oncology letting them know they need to prescribe it. Hope that helps.

  • Ah that’s interesting thank you. I am 41 so not in menopause however periods have stopped during chemo and I have hot flushes. I have not started the zoladex injections yet, I have a telephone appointment in a few weeks with the ovarian suppression team about starting them.

  • I might be wrong but i don't think you will start it until after zoladex, my oncolgist said they like to give the first zoladex pretty soon after chemo as chemo will have probably kick started the menopause process and they don't want to give you too much time for your ovaries to suddenly wake up....

  • This is a very good point. My friend had her zoladex injections alongside her chemo but I didn’t. I’m sure there is a reason but they don’t always relay this to you. Knowledge is power so thank you for that. I will email the oncology team this week.

  • Hi, I had chemo first, then surgery (in August) snd letrozole started in Sept.   The oncologist ensured the GP prescribed it. I order a repeat prescription from my GP and collect every month, this seems to happen very easily.  I also got a free prescriptions card, so you din't pay for cancer treatment.  Best wishes

  • I finished chemotherapy early November 2023, Node clearance surgery Mid December 2023 and started letrozole as well. So essentially 5-6 weeks post chemo.
Radiotherapy all through March 2024 then abemaciclib from end April. My nodes were all clear of cancer anyway, but 2 sentinel nodes had been affected, hence the clearance.

  • My Zometa infusions have been January and July since July 2023- only one left in January 2026Thumbsup tone2

  • Hi

i started letrozole in April 24. Had surgery in May 24 then chemo in Aug 24. My surgeon was the first to prescribe it. When I began chemo my oncologist stopped it. He then  wrote to my gp to begin prescribing it in Jan this year, and I have been on it ever since. I also had my first zoledronic acid infusion in April. My gp continues to prescribe it.

  • I’m not sure if anyone is interested but I have received my letrozole in the post today from the hospital pharmacy. It says to start it 3-4 weeks after last session of chemo so I have diarised it to take on 25th Aug.
