Hello

I am 4 months post RT. Is it normal to have dimpling, swelling, tenderness and sensitivity along with warmth to the breast? Anything I wear leaves indentations to the breast. There is a constant ache in breast and shoulder. The nipple is being very erratic, large and retracts and goes hard of its own accord. Very embarrassing as it is now twice the size of the other one. My tumor was located to exterior rear/chest wall and most of the tenderness is on the opposite side. I dread raising an issue with the doctor just to have more prodding and poking. This reaction is making nauseous with worry.  I am wondering if anybody else has been through this? How long does it last? It is a constant gnawing ache that doesn't go away.

  • Hi  Sorry to hear about your radiotherapy side effects. I finished 5 and a half months ago and have also had a lot of pain, nipple sensitivity, swelling and lumps and bumps. I also get indents from clothing or if I wear a filler (so tend not to because of that). I was also getting swelling until I was referred for scar therapy. This was amazing as it ‘unblocked’ where lymphs weren’t draining properly. It’s also helped to ease tightness and some pain. I hear from various sources that it is not uncommon to have pain etc but we aren’t told to expect it either.
Having said all that, I would absolutely ask to be checked and ask your bcn or GP for a scar therapy referral. I still get a lot of pain but it has improved. Hope you can get some help x

  • Thank you. I have seen the doctor today asboob has now discoloured and I freaked out at the difference this morning. I have been referred back to BCN, 2 week wait, but I am hoping it is just what you have mentioned xxx

  • I think that’s the right thing to do. Do you have a nurse you can call too? Mine is always difficult to get hold of but does call back eventually. Either way, hope you are seen soon and it’s just radiotherapy effects. Let us know how you get on and sending a hug in the meantime. Xxx

  • No,never contacted them. I had my final oncology appt on 30.06 where tenderness, warmth was noted, also the contracted areola. Quote "that's strange, never seen that before" but never said anymore. Said he was happy and dismissed. Once dismissed you have to start the process over again. The Dr has done a 2WW appt so will see on 6th Aug. Xx

  • I should mention though in the 4 weeks that have past it had gotten a lot worse. Xx

  • Sounds like a new referral is the only option then. In the hope that is similar to me, mine fluctuates in intensity and where most hurts etc.

In any case, I will be thinking of you.

  • I have me appt date for 6th August, I should think it is something along the lines of a blockage. You can't treat one cancer occurrence and get another whilst recovering. Surely, that would be insane and unheard of? My lumpectomy was for IDC 20mm, they just spotted it hiding on the routine mammogram. I have had MRI, mammogram and CT scan etc etc they would have seen something else. I have faith, as scary as it is, i am sure all will be well. Thank you for your support and I hope things ease for you. Xx

  • Good luck on 6th. I think you are right - all just been thoroughly checked and treated. Always difficult not to worry though! X
