Hair and Wigs

I have now finished radiotherapy and chemo and happy to say that my hair has started to grow back. I feel ok wearing it as it is around the house but not confident enough to go out the house with it as it is (used to have waist length hair so this has been a bit of a struggle). It has come back with a few more greys than before so was wondering how long everyone waited before they got their hair coloured?

Also does anyone have any advice about keeping cool with a wig? Head feels quite hot after a full day in the sun and we are about to go away for a week and the weather look very toasty! +30C and making me a bit stressed about what should be a wonderful post treatment break away. Thanks!

  • Hi Annabel,

I don't have any personal experience with wigs but reading your post, the first thing I thought of - given that you are going on holiday to a hot place, by the sound of it - how about wearing a sun hat? I have a fairly big semi-floppy hat that looks like a straw hat but not proper straw, and I take that on holiday so that I can sit outside in the sun and read. Something like that - or even a real straw hat if you can find one - would be fairly cool on your head and it wouldn't be obvious that you are wig-less and the hat could be large enough to cover all your head. You could walk around much of the day in that, and nobody would be any the wiser as lots of women wear these types of hats in the sun, even when out on a tour or in a town.

The other thing I thought of was a headscarf, but that would probably look less appropriate if you are in a hot holiday location. That said - in Greece many locals walk around wearing a cotton headscarf. They are not quite the same as the ones you find here - they are a slightly different style but you can buy them in many places in Greece. They keep the locals' heads cool and protected from the sun.

  • Hi Anbabel24 welcome to the forum..I know that many others have asked about hair colouring after chemo but the timescales vary. I didn't have chemo but 20 sessions of radiotherapy and never even thought about my hair..However, like you it is important to me but it took up to a year with a gentle shampoo for my hair to back to anything resembling normal. So I suppose the answer about how long before you can get your hair coloured is ask the advice of your hairdresser as I did and take their recommendations. As to the wig question if you are going abroad is anyone going to know you and how you look? My friend used lovely headscarves which were much cooler for her and saved trailing wigs abroad. I hope you find something that suits you best and that you enjoy that lovely holiday. Best wishes Gail x
