I completed radiotherapy treatment about 8 weeks ago (lumpectomy to right breast & lymph nodes removed). The skin on my breast was a bit pink & itchy at first but it settled down after a few weeks, with just being itchy now & again but no pinkness. I've been applying Aveeno cream twice a day & keeping that area well covered in the sun. However, yesterday my skin was very itchy and pink again, like right after my treatment. Has anyone else experienced this? Wasn't prepared for side effects to come back after having mostly disappeared. Not sure if the recent hot weather has anything to do with it (currently 28 degrees where I am in Scotland which definitely isn't the norm! Lol).
Hi, I finished my radiotherapy about 4 months ago. I used flamigel as I found other creams too heavy and made my breast feel hotter. My initial redness subsided but I had fluctuations for quite a while (and still ‘tanned’) and I still have a lot of pain. Probably worth checking with your BCN but I think you’re right, it could be the increase in temperature. Hope it eases up soon.
That sounds like my experience of radiotherapy too, it was very reactive to heat for a few months. The first year after RT I was careful, then all seemed fine. A year after we went to Greece and I acted as always, didn’t notice anything to the eye, but in photos I still had a clear box shape where the RT had reached! Crazy. Keep moisturising and definitely keep it out of the sun this year is my advise based on my experience x
I'm due to start my 5 x sessions of RT soon. I asked if it could be deferred until after my holls in early september, but oncologist said it's better not to. I am just conscious of it needing to be protected from the sun during the summer and my holls and possible side effects over this period (not that I do a sunbathing holiday). I felt that it would be more manageable after my holls when the weather cools.
Hi HeatherLassie , sorry you’re having this issue post rads and I hope the cooler weather today up north makes things easier. Just wanted to pop in to check if the pink area is spreading? I ask because I had a red area appear much longer after my rads finished (10 months), went in a panic to my GP who prescribed antibiotics. It was treated as a skin infection. I do have mild lympheodema in my treated breast and this makes it more prone to these, hence my panic. It resolved with the antibiotics but the GP told me to monitor it and come back if the red area got bigger (it didn’t). He said to draw markers round the area so I’d know. But I’m absolutely not suggesting you do this as it’s so soon after and the skin will be very delicate. But, long winded way of saying consider getting some medical advice about it particularly if the area gets bigger. I took a photo of it too so I could compare. It wasn’t itchy though so it does sound like yours could be a reaction to the heat.
Hope it’s improving today, love and hugs, HFxx
Thanks everyone! I maybe was overreacting a wee bit as today the skin is definitely not as pink or itchy. I suspect it's been a reaction to the heat. Although I'm keeping covered, that doesn't help the fact it's been so hot. I'll monitor it and if it gets any worse, I'll contact my BCN.
