Nail Polish

Hi everyone. I have just finished x9 sessions of paclitaxal and carboplatin and start x3 sessions of EC on Monday.

I’ve always had my toe nails polished and a friend mentioned to me today, oh you shouldn’t paint your toe nails it’s toxic and can affect the chemo. I am now freaking the hell out!!!

How does it affect the chemo and do I need to take it off and not put it on for again for months now?? The oncologist never mentioned this.

  • Hi Sparkle498uk

Why not give your CNS a call and double check?

You could also call the Macmillan Support Line and speak to one of the nurses.

I wore nail polish throughout chemotherapy and didn't have any issues. I did use tropic nail nectar and plenty of moisturiser. No one ever mentioned it being an issue during any of my chemo sessions. My oncologist did not mention nail polish and saw me wearing it. My chemo was carboplatin and paclitaxel. I did not have EC.

This link has some info that may help.

  • Thanks so much for that.

  • As far as I’m aware, wearing nail polish is fine, in fact when you’re on ECT regime many recommend it to save the nails as that regime is sensitive to light. It’s not advisable to wear false nails or nail extensions where they are really thinning your nails as that can lead to inflammation and infection x

  • Thank you so much for the reassurance that’s good to know x

  • Hi Sparkle! So far I am going to undergo Radiotherapy and still waiting to see if I will be getting Chemo, but I have been doing a lot of research into toxic beauty and home products. The way I see it, I'd rather use 'non-toxic' products for now, it can't hurt to avoid toxic products - but who knows what really is and the wellness industry on this topic is a minefield! Was just to let you know I am the same, I always have my nails done, but found some plant based non toxic nail polishes that seemingly are safe to use (but I am no expert at all!). I've been using Rimmel 'Kind and free Clean' range and Nails Inc 'plant based' range. They aren't quite as good as regular polish and I miss my gel nails, but they do the job. Hope this helps and sending love x

  • Thank you so much for that, I will have a look at those other nail polishes. The oncologist did say some ladies still have their gel nails and that is ok but didn’t really fancy having gels.
