Hello. Just wondering how everyone’s weight was during chemotherapy.

I am on my 8th of 9 paclitaxal and carboplatin and my weight started at 44kg and it’s now 47kg. I’ve always been very slim and never really put weight on so this is worrying me.

I start 3 sessions of EC after my 9th session and just wondered will the weight keep creeping up with that drug also?

  • My weight remained steady while on both paclitaxel and EC.

I was always weighed each time before having chemo as I believe the dose is calibrated to your weight. I'm sure if the chemo nurses were concerned they'd let you know. If mine was slightly higher one week and I commented they always said that they'd prefer me to gain weight rather than lose it while having treatment.

If you're concerned mention it to the chemo nurse when you next go.

  • Thank you, that’s good to know. Yes I guess it’s more healthy to put weight on than lose it so that’s a good point.

  • Hi

i had 3 EC followed by 3 Docetaxel from August to December last year.I put on 2 stone in weight! I think this was due to a combination of things, including steroids, less mobile as chemo knocked me about, and also I found I craved carbs. My body just wanted energy I guess. It is the case that they don’t want to see a weight loss from chemo. However I am pleased to say that since my chemo finished I have lost 32lbs. I walk an average of 4 miles a day and eat more sensibly. I am sure you will lose the extra weight when you finish.

  • Thank you for sharing this. I had 6 months of chemo and it finished end of April. I had EC for 3 months and the red devil for 3. I was on really high doses oof steroids like 80g a day some times and I wonder if I am just not doing enough too lose this weight or if it is treatment related.

Is this something a cancer nurse can actually help with do you know ?

    Thanks

  • Hi

My oncologist told me i would put on weight before i started my 12 weeks of paclitaxel (I really couldn’t believe it! Talk about adding insult to injury)

i believe it’s down to the steroids. All the chemo nurses were very keen to make sure I wasn’t losing weight

I think i put on 10-12lb during those 12 weeks and am now working to get it back off

  • Thank you Susan HB

It's good to know how other people found it.

I feel like I am so slow when moving around that it does not help me burn calories back off and the food I am eating and feeding the kids, i am not thinking through properly its whatever I have the energy to cook that we will all eat. Maybe I need to focus on that more. And not excuse myself

  • Hi Pink belle .  I put on about a stone and a half after op, chemo and radiotherapy.  It was so hard to lose it.  I think you are being very hard on yourself.  You have been through a trauma and it is not possible to just bounce back from it.  You are running your household and cooking and feeding and looking after your family so well done.  People think when treatment is over, you just bounce back and should be as your were before but this never happens.  Please be kind to yourself and take things slowly so you can recover in your own time.  At the end of the day a few pounds here and there after what we have been through is the least of our worries.  Anyway sending you hugs.

  • I think you’re right Lee

It’s good to acknowledge that you’ve been through a lot Pink Belle and that you have a lot to deal with. It will take time for your whole body to recover from the chemotherapy. Making sure everyone has had something to eat is more important than shedding a few pounds. Be kind to yourself.

    Best wishes all x
