Negative breast screening but I'm not certain

Hi everyone

I have recently had a two week urgent screening for breast cancer. I was informed that it's a mass hormone cells. Yet on researching, hormone masses are usually oval or round.

My lump/ lumps is irregular, almost like a long sweet potato.

I was screened 4 years prior to this and they didn't know what the small lump was.

The lump is now much bigger. I don't get pain from it, but my breast and armpit ached a bit, three weeks ago, and my lymph node on opposite side of body was slightly enlarged, ((when I first visited GP))

I've requested a biopsy to be certain. I'm just waiting to see GP regarding my biopsy request.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

  • Hi there.

I haven't been in this situation myself but I know somebody who was misdiagnosed. Her lump was dismissed and told it was nothing to worry about and 10 months later she went to a different hospital and was diagnosed with IDC breast cancer....same lump but it had grown.

It's probably nothing but I would push for a biopsy ASAP and if they wont maybe go private if you can as they can do scans and biopsies in one day.

Hope it's all OK and wish you the best.

  • Thanks for replying

I will definitely go private if the GP can't or won't refer me for a biopsy.

I should have been insistent at the screening, but the whole experience was a a bit overwhelming. My friends also suggested to push for one.

    Fingers crossed it isn't sinister.

I also have frozen shoulder symptoms so I think the ache was hidden by my shoulder pain.

    Best wishes

    Thanks again

  • Did they give you a category on the follow up letter after the scans were done? My follow up letter mentioned U5 which is.most likely to be cancer. They told me before the biopsy results and same days as scan that it was very likely cancer so I had a heads up and more time to get my head around it.

I really hope it's nothing but if you have a niggling feeling you're 100% right to check. It's your life.

  • I had a physical exam. The  Drh then drew a circle on my breast where the lump was. Then I had a mammogram and ultra sound.

I was just told it looks like a massive of hormonal cells. It is in the same area that I first felt a very small lump 4 years ago.

4 years ago the medic simply said they didn't know what the lump was, and that was as far as that check up went.

I haven't had a follow up letter, and nothing was mentioned about grading the lump(s).

The GP surgery didn't see any notifications from the hospital (on Monday ) when I rang to query not having a biopsy.

    Seeing GP Friday.

I'm concerned as I've read that most cancers aren't a round or oval shape like cysts and hormonal cells are.

So my lump is very irregular in shape, hence my concern.

I will go private if I need to. Peace of mind is all I'm hoping for

    Thanks

  • Hi CuriousK  like ACharge80 says, definitely push for a biopsy and don't let them just leave it.  I had hip and back pain, doctor sent me for an X-ray,  it came back with two lesions in my pelvis.  Never heard anything back from doctors.  Eventually I phoned them and they said it was nothing to worry about at all.  Fast forward, yes they were cancer.  I am not saying yours is cancer but definitely push for biopsy if only to give yourself peace of mind.  You know your body better than anyone else.  Good luck x  Let us know how you get on.

  • I will be assertive, especially as they didn't seem certain on the diagnosis of 'just a mass of hormonal cells'

And from the little bit of info I have read, only a biopsy can be certain of it being cancer, or not.

I've had stiff frozen shoulder symptoms aswell, and my breasts feel hot, which has never happened before now.

Hopefully it is just hormones / pre- menopause

It's terrible that had you not of been inquisitive with the x-ray, the outcome could have been very different.

As you say, you know you're own body.

    Fingers crossed

Thanks and best wishes for know, until I have more news

  • Push push for a scan. I was told it was hormonal 2 years ago. Now on chemo for stage 3 and wish I had listed to my self. Insist on all the tests. Early diagnosis is best. Hugs

  • Apologies in the late reply. I've had issues trying to get back I to here with password.

I went back to the GP, specifically a GP who focused on cancer.

He didn't examine me. I asked for biopsy which he refused. The reason being that an unnecessary biopsy could cause a lymphoedema. That I should be relieved with the test result if mammogram and ultrasound. He believed the tests will be core t and I dint need a biopsy

I said I'm happy to take that risk. He told me I would have to go private, but in the meantime he would request a hormone blood test to check my FSH ( to see if I'm in the menopause).

I did explain that I had hot sweats and menopause symptoms approx 4 years ago,  not long after I first felt a lump ..(that was also dismissed as not bring cancer, but they didn't know what it was)

Bloods came back with FSH level of 43.

(FSH levels of 33 to 100ish suggests I have gone through/ going through the menopause)

I'm 45, so I would have been about 40-42 when this started/ happened...a very young for this.

I'm annoyed as I wasnt taken seriously then either. I was struggling with hot sweats and brain fog back at work then. This has eased somewhat now.

    So I'm wondering/ asking-

Are breast lumps common during menopause?

Never had any lumps at any point before my 40s, not even during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

    ????

I'm trying to ask if others had weird shaped lumps with BC , also during perimenopause or menopause.
