Immediate reconstruction with implants

Has anyone here had experience with implant-based reconstruction?

I'm scheduled to have a mastectomy at the end of this month and am considering immediate reconstruction using implants. I live in Scotland and I'm unsure if expanders are typically placed after mastectomy here. There's also a possibility I may need radiotherapy after surgery, which makes me question whether immediate implant reconstruction is the best option.

If anyone could share their experience or insights, I’d really appreciate it.

Thank you!

  • Hello,  , my experience was that yes, I had an immediate recon with an implant as I was considered low risk then and might not need radiotherapy. My surgeon suggested that she’d use a temporary implant if I’d needed radiotherapy as that does tend to harden the implant, and then replace afterwards. However, after 6 years the cancer sadly recurred behind the implant and I’ve since had all removed, and am now flat. But that’s not to detract from 5 years happily coping with the slightly smaller but nicely shaped boob.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’m really sorry to hear about the recurrence — that must have been incredibly difficult after everything you'd already been through. But it's reassuring to hear that you had five years where you felt happy and comfortable with your reconstruction, even with the size difference. It's also helpful to hear about how your team planned for the possibility of radiotherapy and the impact it might have had on the implant — that kind of insight can really help others facing similar decisions. Wishing you continued strength and healing on your current path. Two hearts
