Hi Madmozza , I was told to wear them until I was back to a more normal active life, in my case I managed till I had the first drain out, about a week. 

by then I was doing a reasonable walk each day.

I was told upon discarge at the hospital to wear them for a couple of weeks. BC nurse said that if I was mobile, just for a day or two.  I have to say that I wore them for a few days, but at night ( when not mobile) for a few weeks. I just didn't want the risk of a dvt.
