Breast changes after radiotherapy / elective surgery

Hello, I am due to see my consultant in a few weeks. One thing we are due to discuss is whether to proceed with revisions to my healthy breast.
My oncologist said I should wait at least 12 months as my radiated breast can change in the months after radiotherapy. Does anyone have any experience of this? Colour change and swelling settled a couple of months ago although I still get quite a lot of pain.
Also, I am having doubts about further surgery. I had WLE and SNLB followed by a partial mastectomy. My right breast is about 2-3 cup sizes smaller so it’s obvious but I can get away with it when I am dressed sort of. My practical side is pro surgery (particularly for sports but also body image) but I also feel weird having elective surgery. I feel so tired from everything but also want to make a decision and (try to) move forward.
would really appreciate any advice or thoughts. Thanks x

  • Hi   this must be such a difficult decision to make, I only had a lumpectomy so whilst my breasts look a bit different there's nothing noticeable when I'm wearing a bra. I guess if it were me I would literally list down the pros and cons to see if having them on paper helped me reach a conclusion.   You might also want to chat this through with the lovely folks at Macmillan (0800 808 0000) as they could give you some more independent advice.  But whatever you do has to feel right for you in the end. Best of luck with your decision,

  • Hi,

I had my lumpectomy 17 months ago and have the same thoughts as you about having my left breast reducued. Ive seen a surgeon and he is okay about doing it ; Being 72 now Im not sure its worth the stress of having another operation. I have a friend who has had 2 lots of breast reductions because her boobs just seem to grow back. She is the just a bit younger than me and doesnt seem to have any problems with it . Ive got my 6 monthly check , mamo and blood tests and a visit to the oncologist and then the radiologist.Perhaps I will feel more positive about doing it as I really feel it would be more comfortable as my boob is twice the size of the other .Good luck with your decision.  Ill update my reply next month. x

  • Thank you  I appreciate your reply and advice. I am going to do a list and see where that gets me. Blush
I had a long chat with my partner about it last night and that also helped. Xx

  • Thanks   - it’s a difficult decision… thanks for sharing your thoughts. I suppose I had assumed it would be one op and that would resolve the lack of symmetry. I don’t need a perfect match but it is definitely uncomfortable having such a big difference. Good to know your surgeon is happy to do the op. I will also update after my appointment - we can compare notes xx

  • Hi bobof,

Good news from this end.My Mamo was perfect and my blood tests too, finally got my cholesterol back to normal levels. I've been taking my dog for 1 hour long walks early mornings so I've lost half a stone and regained some lost muscle. I need to lose another stone in weight but it's so hot here in Spain at the moment that I've had to stop the walks. Doing some senior chair exercises hoping not to regain what I've lost. I won't bother with the resizing of my left breast until I've got rid of some more fat , glad to say that both my boobs have dhrunk a bit.Generally I'm much happier with life.

Hope all is good with you

  • Thanks for the update  and sharing this great news! Tada Hope you are feeling great too. Congratulations on the weight loss and cholesterol too .
I used to live in Spain - I don’t miss those hot summers but I do miss the marcha!
My appointment was a bit of a non-event as I saw a different consultant. I am waiting for an MRI at the moment as there are a few niggles but (all being well) don’t expect to see my consultant til Nov / Dec when hopefully we will firm a date for revisions (I am ready!). Take care and look forward to the next update xx
