Hello,

I hope anyone have any advice on supplements. I historically have taken a joint supplement and hair supplement. I asked my BCN if they were ok and she said that the only thing to avoid is grapefruit if on tamoxifen (I’m not). However I know that there are question marks around sage, collagen, turmeric, … Does anyone know if there is a guide we can use? Or does anyone have any advice? (My cancer was hormone positive).

thanks!

I'm Daisy53 one of the Community Champions on this forum.  I suggest that you talk to your oncology nurse about what supplements are safe to use while having treatment.

  • Thanks for your reply and suggestion Daisy. My nurse didn’t have any advice which is why I asked here.

  • Ask your bcn. Lots are safe but in my experience personally and professionally -
Unfortunately most supplements are a total waste of money. And some are harmful - tumeric is I believe a NO if you are on tamoxifen.
Vit D and calcium - are often given. And vit D is hard to get enough of in the UK!

pretty much everything else you should be able to get enough of from a balanced plant based diet. So I’d be inclined to say don’t waste your money!!
caveat might be if you have a restrictive diet in an particular respect,

exercise, water, cut out the drink, Mediterranean diet, lots of olive oil, bit of morning sunshine , decent sleep , take the tablets the doctors give you……. I guess that’s what gives you the best shot at living a healthy life Sunglasses

  • Hi, it's frustrating when your nurse can't really advise.  You can contact the Macmillan team and get some advice from one of their specialists.  Give them a call on 0800 808 0000 or use the chat functionality here Link here
