I’m struggling to decide wether I’ve had breast cancer or I’ve got breast cancer?

I had a lumpectomy before last Christmas with full node clearance on the left side. The cancer was 14 mms and grade 3, there were 3 lymph nodes affected, they were sent for onco  type testing and came back as no need for chemotherapy. My surgeon when I had my follow up appointment in January said “the cancer has gone, radiotherapy and letrozole is just belt and braces” . Radiotherapy was tough, made much worse with an extreme bout of sciatica, finished four weeks ago and at last I’m recovering from the sciatica. I also had the Zometa infusion with possibly no side effects. Now my mind is going into overdrive. Do I refer to myself as having breast cancer or I’ve had breast cancer?
I realize that the Letrozole is to cut down the chances of it reoccurring, but does that mean I’ve still got it hiding away waiting to come back?
Everything happened so quickly in the beginning , just 3 and 1/2 weeks from a call back on the screening mammogram ( to old at 73 so I asked to be included but had no symptoms) to surgery. Now I feel confused. Thanks for reading.

  • Hi best boobs forward.

I think it's up to you and how you're feeling... In my head (1st time round) whilst I was having treatment I was in "I have cancer" mode. After it slowly changed to "I had cancer."

Just take your time to recover from the sciatica too!

Love and hugs to all xxx

  • Thank you for replying, I am old enough to be very correct about ‘grammar’ and using correct tenses, but in this case it’s driving me crazy!!!!

  • Hi,

I always say I've been treated for breast cancer, but I don't expect it to come back.

Obvs small chance that it will - but I've also got a 3% risk of having a heart attack in next 10 years, and I'd imagine a higher risk of accidental death, especially when my husband is behind the wheel - but I don't dwell on these stats.

Like you, all my treatments were curative, and there is no evidence of cancer on any of my subsequent annual mammograms -  the phrase they use on the mammogram results letter is 'no evidence of disease.'

But, because there is always that small risk that some cancer cells remain, or a new cancer may form, they will never say you are completely cured.

But, saying you have breast cancer is probably not correct unless any test results show this to actually be the case.

    Take care.

  • Love the hubby fact (?) I feel the same if my son is driving and absolutely refuse a lift if his wife is driving.

  • Love the hubby fact too - mines the same I have to do a crossword as I can’t look. When I last saw the oncologist I explained that I had yet to react to my cancer and she said ‘you HAD cancer you no longer have cancer’. I hope this might be useful

  • Hi

Like you, mine was picked up from a routine screening and I had no symptoms.

After surgery my surgeon told me that she had removed all of the cancer. Micro deposits were found in one of the sentinel lymph nodes they removed so I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I was told by my oncologist at the end of treatment that they did not expect it to come back and I'm now coming up to the end of my 3 years of Zometa.

I consider that I had cancer but no longer do.

  • That’s great I’m going to have to get my head around this! Thank you

  • That is fab! Seemed to be so busy with appointments and then after the Zometa nothing, except too time to spend thinking.

  • It has been removed so therefore you had cancer.

Can I just ask what type of breast cancer you had? Triple negative, HER2 negative or HER2 positive? I had grade 3 and 1 lymph node affected and oncotype came back high.

  • Hi best boobs forward

From the start I have refused to take ownership of the breast cancer I was diagnosed with - it was totally uninvited.

When I speak to anyone about it I always say that I was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2024 and have had treatment for it.
Probably sounds a bit daft, but it works for me.

    All the very best xx
