Hi after recently finishing 4x cycles of EC which have been awful at times I went today for my 1st of 4x cycles Paclitaxel. After only minutes of it being administered I started to feel very strange like I was drunk, couldn’t keep my eyes open, palpitations, restless legs, hot flashes. It was like an emergency room, lots of nurses appeared from nowhere, pulling a screen around me and I was told I was having a reaction to the chemo. Gave me fluids via my port an gradually things improved. So scary and my husband was in tears, they said that they wouldn’t continue with treatment today. I’ve found out it’s quite common for this to happen with this type of Paclitaxel ( they offer this first as it’s not as expensive) so now my treatment is suspended until they can get the go ahead to continue with another type (milky in appearance) was all I could remember. Nurse is contacting my consultant and will phone me. She also said I might have to have this in 3x weekly cycles. Feeling so sad that my treatment is going to be possibly extended, had 28th may ensconced in my mind as last chemo day. Hope I haven’t got long to wait for my new ( expensive) chemo to resume
So had phone call from my team, they want to start me on Abraxane next week, consultant not back till Monday when my next set of bloods are due. So depending on how early the consultant looks at my case I could be getting bloods Monday or Tuesday and chemotherapy Wednesday (as usual) or Thursday, the drug takes 3 days to make. Anyone been on Abraxane before…
Hi Csf
Hope you are well. I had exactly the same reaction to Paclitaxel on my first treatment back in Nov 24 and they stopped the treatment. I went back the following week and started on Abraxane which was absolutely fine. It does look like a milky substance. I finished 12 weekly treatments and then on to EC & Pembro every 3 weeks x 4. I have just finished chemo and waiting for a date for my lumpectomy. I have Triple Negative Breast cancer and the tumour has shrunk substantially. It's been at times tough but I've treatment has worked! Wishing you well going forward just rest when you can, accept help and be kind to yourself. It will soon be done xx
Abraxane is the brand name for NAB-Paclitaxel. It’s the same active chemo drug but in a different, non albumin bound suspension, to standard Paclitaxel. I understand allergic reactions to Paclitaxel are usually to the suspension, not the drug itself, so would hope you would be fine.
I have had both of the drugs at different times.
