Hi. Just wondered what oncology appointments people got during their chemotherapy?
I had first chemo last Monday and I have a telephone appointment booked for next week day after second session then I have a face to face appointment a few weeks after that.
That seems a bit excessive to me? I want to just turn up to the chemo appointments and get on with it without the worry of other appointments. Any side effects just get discussed with the chemo nurses on the ward I presumed.
Yea that’s pretty normal. I’d be worried if I wasn’t booked in.
Side effects can either be via the chemo nurses who would get a specialist nurse involved (they did with me) or you call the 24 hour number if it couldn’t wait.
Sometimes the dose may be lowered which is where the oncologist would come in.
I was hospitalised with suspected neutropenic sepsis - again, the oncologist makes the decisions of what is to happen with treatment.
The chemo nurses don’t determine whether you can have treatment if there is an issue. They have parameters that they work within. So for example if your bloods are low, they go to oncologist.
My LFT’s were all over so they went to the oncologist who wanted me to have 5 weeks of steroids.
I saw my oncologist on 4th March. I have a telephone consultant with him on 22nd April - I don’t start chemo tablets until the day after.
Mine is approx every 6 weeks unless any issues.
They are the prescriber of this lethal drug we have to take because ‘we’re part of the club’.
I get the worry of more appointments but think of it as a safety net instead of a hinderance xx
I didn't have any appointments with my oncologist during chemotherapy except one towards the end to discuss starting radiotherapy and Zometa.
Your Chemo Nurses if like mine or in my case Breast nurses, report everything to your Oncologist. F To Faces are so important cause if the Chemo has not changed anything, then your Oncologist is the one person that can alter your treatment, and arrange a PET Scan if they think you need one. Be lost without my Oncologist as she is Brilliant.
