Pre cancerous cells

Hi I had a lumpectomy in November 2024.  In January this year I had to go for another shave of flesh due to the tumour being bigger than expected and pre cancerous cells.  There was a period of 42 days between operations.  I have been told they got all the cancer and after 5 days of radium treatment all seems well and I am now currently in remission.  I worry that during the 42 days that precancerous cells were able to roam around my body via the blood stream, am I silly in thinking it could spread x

  • Hi   Hope you are doing ok. I also had a long delay between my surgeries (7 weeks) and in my case further DCIS and another invasive tumour were found. Like you I felt very worried about the length of time between surgeries and possibility of the cancer spreading in that time.
I asked my consultant and he said it wasn’t long enough to cause concern and radiotherapy would ‘mop up’ stray cells. I agree that it’s difficult not to feel some anxiety over this but we also have to trust our medical teams. They are treating similar cases day after day.
Perhaps you can also raise it with your BCN / consultant for further reassurance.
I hope it is at least helpful to know that it’s not an unusual decision (assuming we aren’t the only 2 this has happened to!) xx

  • Hi

I totally agree with   This is exactly what I was told.  They have to leave enough time for you to heal from surgery before starting radiotherapy, so this is the norm.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • I'm similar in that I had lump taken out October results came back in November showing stage 1 breast cancer and no clear margin, due to delays I only had the op in February to be told last week there were only 75% clear margins so back in again to tomorrow. Been told all along it's can take 5-10 years for precancerous cells to change so the waiting although not ideal isn't a massive risk.
