Mastectomy with implant

Hello,

had a mastectomy with implant nearly 3 weeks ago and 2 lymph nodes removed.  Have been in a fair amount of pain.  Now I have a pink/red area on my breast.  Very uncomfortable.  I have been put on antibiotics in case it is an infection.  Really worried it could be and will get worse.  Still have fluid around the breast.  Has anyone else experienced this.  Getting quite depressed as I feel worse every day.

  • Hello  and welcome to a site you didn’t even want to know about…..

I had an mx with implant too in 2018 (sadly, I think partly owing to a lot of stress) the beast recurred after 6 years and sneaked behind the implant so had more treatment with the implant needing to be removed in surgery, last May. My advice is to never stop being vigilant.

However, to return to that original surgery, I had more trouble with the sentinel node biopsy surgery a few weeks before the mx, than the mx itself. Yes, for a day or two I did appreciate the local anaesthetic my surgeon had put in place, and then needed regular paracetamol, but after a week or so I was able to reduce the dose a bit and start exercising as per the booklet I was given. I also had some fluid build up in spite of the drains (one stayed in place until 15 days post surgery) and my BCN drained that for me. After that I think all went pretty well.

Do ask your BCN to see you again and ask the surgeon to see you too, if this pain continues and is bad enough not to be managed with just paracetamol as it might indicate possible infection (one that the antibiotic isn’t clearing) or too much build up of fluid. I hope it will settle for you soon.

  • Thank you Moony.

i am going to the drop in at the breast clinic tomorrow morning as the red area is spreading and fluid build up is getting worse.  Paracetamol doesn’t touch the pain.  I have also read that antibiotics don’t help with the infection.  See what they say.  I am dreading another painful night.  Thank you for being supportive.

  • I’m glad you’re going in tomorrow, I really hope they can help as it sounds as if you’ve got some infection that isn’t being helped.

    Please post afterwards,
