After radiotherapy

Hello all, I had chemo and radiotherapy 2 years ago, I’ve now joined the gym and been told by a friend that I shouldn’t be useing the sauna as I’ve had radiotherapy, does anyone know if it’s ok to use 2 years after radiotherapy

  • Not sure about it being linked to radiotherapy, I thought it was due to lymph node removal and the increased risk of lymphoedema (but may be wrong). Either way I think saunas are meant to be avoided. x

  • From what I understand, skin stays sensitive for many years after radiotherapy. I’d ask your BCN for advice on that.

  • I’m popping in again as our new radiotherapy unit is now starting to treat patients, and I met a member of staff on my way out after my blood test this morning; there should be a ‘late effects’ specialist clinic in each radiotherapy area, well worth asking and then asking them your question?

  • Hi Meandm,

I'm currently receiving radiotherapy in Finland. I was told by the nurses here that it's fine to go to the sauna even during the treatment as long as the temperature is not super high (probably not an issue in a gym) and cover the area with a wet and cool towel.

Not sure what the official guidelines in the UK say about this, every country is different I suppose.
