Does breast surgery cause hormonal changes?

Hello fellow Forum members

Over the last few weeks I have undergone three operations to remove my cancer. I have recently been overhearing in bed and dealing with disturbed sleep. Can  breast surgery disrupt the regulation of hormones, or is it more likely to be something else?  I’m not on hormone therapy- yet anyway.

  • hi.

wow, that's a lot of surgery.

As someone who also struggles with  disturbed sleep, I understand how awful it is. I went through the same thing. I was on HRT before my diagnosis as my cancer was fed by oestrogen and coming off that definitely contributed to insomnia. However, anxiety also played a part as did being mindful about my sleeping position after surgery and my brain was working overtime.

Can you contact your breast nurse to ask? Mine was very helpful but I will say that I had tried everything she suggested. I spoke to my GP and she prescribed me Zoplicone for 7 days to help me sleep - I took it when I was desperate.

I also think that the recovery period, spent mostly in bed, possibly contributed to not sleeping because I was so inactive.

I've just finished 4 rounds of chemo and that hasn't been a walk in the park but I get sleep in two bursts. one burst from 10 til 2 and the other about 3 to 7. This is a massive improvement!

I do hope things turn a corner for you and wish you well in your recovery.

  • Thank you Emma, that is very kind of you to reply. I’m 51 and must be perimenopausal and my last op has left me with anxiety problems- hard to know what is causing what. Thanks, I’ll speak to my breast nurse about it. Take good care and hope your sleep continues to improve xx

  • Hi  , sorry to hear you’re having these issues, it’s horrible to have disrupted sleep. I’m wondering if it could be after effects from the anaesthetics? You’ve had a lot of surgery in a short time. I’ll try to post a link but it probably won’t work, an article re anaesthetics effects on sleep and melatonin…. nope can’t post the link, but here’s a screenshot. Don’t know why it’s so huge!! Sending love and a big virtual hug, HFxx
