Has anyone ever consulted a Naturopath on their journey? I’m not asking for specific advice, but I’m considering my options. I was struggling with side effects of hormone therapy so I’m on a short break. Before I make my decision about whether to restart , I thought I might poke my head into the rabbit hole that is naturopathy , but as a retired nurse, I’m hesitant about anything that’s not NHS. I’d appreciate any thoughts.

  • Hi

I've not consulted a Nauropath but I guess I did a tiny bit of it by changing my diet quite considerably.  I was already a vegetarian, but ate a lot of processed food - pot noodles/frozen pizzas etc!  So I researched what foods were good at reducing oestrogen.  Although I took Anastrozole, I still eat and drink them and reduced my alcohol intake - specifically I eat a lot of brocolli  and have a dozen almonds for breakfast daily and have green tea to drink (I gather it can reduce iron, so I don't drink more than 3 mugs a day). Mushrooms and pomegranates are supposed to be good for reducing oestrogen, but I don't like either of them.

I guess it depends on the benefit vs the side effects of the hormone tablets for you.  Mine was about 3% but I didn't get much in the way of side effects, so I took them.  If I'd had serious side effects that decision may well have been very different.  As a nurse, you probably have seen the NHS predict tool to see per your diagnosis.

  • Hi  , I’m similar to  in that I’ve taken all the treatments offered but have made lifestyle changes, mainly in relation to diet and exercise. Have you thought of contacting the Penny Brohn centre? Although it’s in Bristol, there are online sessions as well as in person. A couple of years ago I listened in to a webinar from the centre, which was discussing the role of mistletoe in cancer treatment. I didn’t feel it was appropriate for my stage of treatment but I am going to look into the possibility of a consultation there in the next year or so as I am due to finish 7 years of Anastrozole in just over a year. The attraction for me of the centre is that it offers advice re complementary treatments in addition to, rather than instead of, the conventional ones. The other place I’ve found helpful is Future Dreams in London. I went to a diet talk/ discussion there, led by a dietitian of many years experience who has specialised in oncology. It has online sessions too.
Also, re side effects of hormone therapy, I went to a very interesting talk called something like ‘The Magic of Mushrooms’ (not actually magic mushrooms!) and there was a whole section re the use of particular mushroom extracts during cancer treatments , to enhance the effectiveness of things like chemo and radiotherapy as well as to help with side effects. Apparently this is used extensively in some other countries eg Japan but not here. It’s on my todo list to investigate further! But I’m a terrible procrastinator (and I feel Anastrozole has increased this tendency) and I’d always rather just go out walking. And I’d want some guidance too.
Sorry for the long ramble, I feel another side effect is an inability to be concise! Will be interested to hear what others think….. love and hugs, HFxx
