Hello lovely people, I hope that everyone is doing as well as can be. I’m just wondering if anyone has encountered a situation as mine. I have been off since October and am now ready to return to work. My employer says I can only return to work with a note from the GP to confirm I am fit to return to work. The GP has said they do not provide such notes. Upon informing my employer they have come back to me saying they will accept a letter from myself stating I am fit to return. All sounds a bit weird and would like to hear if anyone has been through this? I am an nhs worker. Thank you.

  • Hi Ruva, I also work in NHS, when I returned to work I just needed a phone call with occupational health who then wrote a report for my line manager about a phased return, maybe ask for an occupational health appointment

  • Thank you so much for replying. My line manager made a referral to occu health but am told they are swamped and it may be a while before I hear back. It just seem weird that HR would ask me to write a letter stating I’m fit to return.

  • Yes I agree sounds very unusual, the Trust I work for only allow 2 weeks phased return but as I had 6 months off I had a lot of annual leave to use up so I could build up my hours gradually, hope your transition back into work goes well xx

  • Hi Ruva welcome to the forum  Occupational Health are the ones responsible to say that you are fit or not for work and they should be progressing this with your Managers with any recommendations of adjustments that you may need in the workplace.

Like you I worked for many years in the NHS and I'm shocked at what you are being asked to do.

I would suggest a phone call with Occ Health asap it is their responsibility to do this, not yours.. Hope you get a good outcome and get back to work soon.

  • Thank you for your reply. It sure does make sense that occu health assess my fitness. I will follow this up tomorrow. Best wishes.
