I've been recommended mushroom powders by a friend - im unsure. No proof, very little mention on benefits. Just looking at boosting immunity and helping sleep - grasping for anything. BCN/oncology have nothing against the list I've given as suggestion to take but just say nothing to prove effectiveness plenty to prove that bank balance will dwindle (true - its around £300 a month).

  • Hi

I was told that Turkey tail is good for breast cancer !! It’s a mushroom too . I have got 2 months supply don’t feel any difference yet !! It’s supposed to help with immune system and radiation ??

  • Are you just purchasing yourself?

  • Yes from British supplements

  • Thanks for your reply, very nervous taking anything at the moment, eating is a challenge just thinking what to have is a stress. I'll have a look at that website x

  • Ninsim steer clear of anything that is not prescribed for you it will only upset any other meds you have to take for now. As you say yourself no evidence! That speaks volumes to me that not enough is known about this to ensure that it would be OK for you.

  • This is my thought- an op plus starting chemo over next 2 months is plenty to cope with but worried I'm not getting enough from foods alone. Going to ask about vit D level in bloods as and vit B12 as that has been low in the past. I've seen supergreen drinks like Rheal to aid sleep and immunity so thinking they's be ok, someone mentioned spirulina to me but not ventured yet - adding to smoothie is plan but not got to smoothie making as yet. I have added more fruit and veg to my diet, lessened processed sauces with pasta etc, added spinach and chia seeds and flaxseeds to diet, more water, chamomile tea in evening and no coffee, no crisps, no sugar on cereal, no chocolate/cake only as one day a week treat- doing my best to be healthier full stop. I should keep bmi under 25 with chance of lymphodoema so need to stay there. Think Im doing my best and the jump to mushrooms is just too much for me. But friend is saying others she knows have had great results. Just don't think swallowing or mixing 27 capsules a day is something I can face - this Dr has made a plan with that much!! You need a very high dose for any benefit according to what i have found out of the little out there. Not convinced it will change the course of what my body has decided to dump on me though. Its a minefield

  • Hi, my oncologist has been keeping an eye in Vit D for me and has prescribed a supplement, but I am only taking it on her advice.  I echo Granny's comments, follow the advice of your medical team. It’s natural to be worried and to want to do the best for yourself, but in my view they are the experts. Best wishes

  • Hi

I didn’t take any supplements whilst on chemo as I wasn’t sure if it would interfere .I took turkey tail in between I have just started radiotherapy so have stopped whilst I’m having this even though they say it enhances the effect !! I can’t find any proof evidence. I think a healthy diet is best to keep you strong whilst having treatment and after. I have to be honest it’s Xmas so I have had chocolate and some fizz but it’s been a tough year. In the new year I intend to lose some weight and up my excercise .Good luck in your journey I’m nearly at the end of mine .

  • Hi Ninsim

I would echo everyone here. The people these supplements benefit most are those promoting them and who are being paid for them.

It sounds as if you are doing everything you should diet wise. Maybe try some additional exercise earlier in the day, just before bed time can wake you more, which may help you sleep a little better and also is of great benefit in supporting your over all health.

    Take care
