Sloshing noise

Hi everyone,

I had my surgery on 22nd December (wide local incision and sentinel node biopsy plus a chest wall perforated flap reconstruction) healing OK and the pain is now under control. When I am walking around I can hear a sloshing sound in my breast as though there is a lot of fluid, although I don't have much swelling from the surgery and not red/inflamed.

Just wondering if this noise is normal and if it will go on its own, or does it stay like this?

Thanks xx

  • Hi Fly7

I am glad that you are healing ok and your pain is under control.

With the fluid sound when you are moving around, it would perhaps be best to give your hospital a call (there would be a number on your discharge papers) and get some advice. It may well be something that can happen but it is probably best to give them a call to get some reassurance as it is only a few days since your surgery.

I often called my team and they never minded. Always best to check, rather than worry.

  • Thank you, no one there today, but I will give them a call tomorrow. I'm also going to see the district nurse tomorrow to have my dressings changed so I'll mention it then to x

  • Hi, I had this with my second mastectomy. When I laid down it was a bit like a little waterbed mattress. It could be the beginnings of a seroma, but might not be. I had mine aspirated (completely painless) and it came back a little bit. A few weeks later the fluid had been naturally absorbed by my body. The district nurses will likely have seen this before. X

  • Thank you, I'll keep an eye on it and mention it to the district nurses when the change my dressings. Thought I was going mad when I heard it for the first time lol xx

  • I had this after my wide local excision and it was so disconcerting! I called my nurse who said to not panic but keep an eye on it and it ended up going away on its own. Hope all goes well with you x

  • Hi I read June bugs reply to you below. I was exactly the same - felt like I was carrying a half empty hot water bottle even my family could hear it. I was told if you can keep going with it and it’s not sore then the fluid will re absorb and it’s stuff you need like plasma etc. Please check with your BCN first - I was reassured by her explanation so I hope you’re the same!
