Just a quick one, I have long hair and also a young baby who likes to pull it. I’m starting treatment this week and hoping to cold cap… can I tie my hair back when I’m inbetween treatments- what have people found useful/ not useful? I’ve read all sorts online.. just assuming my usual mum bun might be too harsh for my head? I’ve also read don’t wash your hair 3 days prior or 3 days after treatment.. but I’m having it weekly so I guess just once inbetween?

thanks

  • Hi il soon be starting chemo aswell, I would definitely like to know aswell, I have a one year old and a 8year old.

  • Hi,

I can't answer your question, but I have found 'the cold cap club' videos on YouTube. I've only watched a couple, but they answer loads of questions about cold capping and hair care. It's linked to a cancer hair care charity, I think. I'm watching to make a decision to cold cap or not.

    HTH,

    Good luck with your treatments.

  • 8m and 3yo here so I empathise on many levels. Wishing you the best for your treatment. Yeah it’s these little things that don’t seem a big deal but day to day are actually going to have an impact..!

  • Oh thanks I will check those out!!

  • Sending lots of hugs Hugging it’s so hard isn’t it. We will get through this! We have to get through this! 100 definitely! Our precious baby’s will give us the strength to carry onHeartsyou aswell hun xx ️

  • Hi   I cold capped throughout mine. Yes you can tie your hair back, I wohkd use those plastic bands you get or a soft scrunchie so it doesn’t pull your hair. I would also highly recommend brushing your hair everyday, even if your hair starts coming out. It is upsetting when that happens but I left mine for fear of more hair coming out and it got all matted and when I sorted it out, I had a week of hair loss in one go which was even worse!
I was told to not wash it as much as possible so I did mine once every 4/5 days but usually washed mine the day before treatment. With cold cap, you have to put conditioner on your hair first (the nurses will prob do this) so when I got home I would just gently rinced it out by standing under the shower and letting it run out.

I would also recommend getting a sleep cap so if your hair does start falling out, it’s not all over the pillow. They’re also handy to wear around the house too!

    good luck with your treatment!

  • Hi.  I cold capped.  I had long hair but cut it a bit shorter to avoid tangles and pulling.  I found brushing pulled a lot of hair out and the gentler I could be on my hair the better.  Soft scrunchies wiki be fine just nothing tight I think.  Gentle shampoo.  I used Aveeno baby shampoo.  When I finished chemo I still had enough hair to look ok.  And it’s grown back quite strong.  As it’s grown from the roots I’ve had to cut it shorter and shorter because the ends just looked so thin.  So if I was starting again I would have just cut it shorter at the start.  It’s difficult I think because you want to retain yourself and look like yourself.   Good luck.   Xxx
