Hi I'm new here, I was diagnosed in March with breast cancer I had my surgery in June it was in both breast so got lump cut out at same time, had to have a second op as the location post was left in  had to wait till I heald radiotherapy Finnished 6th November I'm doing OK with that.

I had been thinking hrt for 15 years and had to stop taking it as my cancer is hormone, all the menopause simtoms came back with a bang. I was put on tamoxifen that made it worse, been taken off them and waiting to see what happens next.

I'm really struggling with the sweating keeping me awake, stopping me going out as I feel uncomfortable, sleep with windows open, fan at side of bed and one where I sit, have to change bed during night and close during daytime.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

  • ask a out switching the pills. people have had better outcomes with diff. brands types, cant hurt to ask

  • Hi   I’ve been forced into the menopause with tamoxifen so feel your pain with the sweats. I have been told by my oncologist that a lot of women have reduced symptoms by taking a low dose of antidepressants so might be worth talking to your bcn or GP about it.

mine has def improved over the last couple of months, I’ve been taking zinc tablets, a nurse said it worked for her so could also be worth trying that also!

    good luck!

  • Thanks for your help I have a telephone consultation this week so I will mention this to him x

  • Thanks for your help I will speak to consultant this week and I will give the zinc a go x

  • Hello  , I feel your pain! I too had to come off HRT suddenly (I gather that’s a big shock to the system) and then was on Letrozole for around 3 years, then Tamoxufen for the final 2 of my 5 years (it’s supposed to be kinder to the bones, I had already got a diagnosis of mild osteoporosis) and yes, those flushes!

do ask if there’s anything supplement-wise that can be suggested, wear layers if possible, cotton, bamboo or linen if possible, as natural fibres soak up the sweat and disperse it more naturally. I acquired a number of rechargeable hand held fans which were a boon in the hot summer months. Bedclothing layers too…,

oddly, once you feel a flush coming on, try and totally distract yourself, get really deep into something can help your body recover an equilibrium surprisingly quickly.

    Hope things ease for you….

  • I have had to come off hrt abruptly too am waiting for surgery n the hot flushes are back am dreading it getting worse once on hormone therapy, I was told they don’t advise natural remedies either

  • Hi Pauline16,

So sorry that you're struggling. I finished chemo back in Feb & have been taking Letrozole & Abemaciclib since March. I'm 55 & about 4yrs post menopause so going back to all those symptoms is a bit of a bummer. Anyway, during menopause I used organic apple cider vinegar (with the Mother) to control the hot flashes. When my cooked chemo brain decided to remember this, I started back on it & it works really well for me. About 1cm (sorry, not sure how many mls that is) in a glass of water (or juice or whatever you like) in the morning works for me. I didn't take it until the Abemaciclib dose was such that the diarrhoea stopped (far too acidic otherwise). Have used Aspalls or whatever brand Lidl sells, but it must be with the Mother. Def makes it easier for me. My oncologist is fine with me taking it.

    Hang in there.

    Kind thoughts coming your way.

    xx

  • Have you heard of the Ladycare magnet - I got double whammy of symptoms due to coming off hrt and going into Letrozole. The magnet has helped my flushes a lot. Not a cure but frequency and intensity much better.
unfortunately I’m taking a break from Letrozole as it was killing my back to such a degree I couldn’t bend/tie my shoe laces anymore. MRI showed degenerative disc disease but nothing else so don’t know where I go from here…

  • Someone suggested to me when I first was diagnosed having a cooling mat she got slip it under your pillow and if you get hot at night use it - I’m sure it’s one which animals can use too.  Not on the hormone therapy pills yet but will keep this in mind if needed x
