Hello, I was diagnosed with BC last October and am due my first mammogram tomorrow.
I am very nervous, mainly because my breast is very tender and painful. Also does anyone know if you get the results straight away or do you have to wait for a couple of weeks?
I am panicked and worried about the outcome and being given bad news again.
Hi Valleyside
Congratulations on the year. It's a bit of a milestone isn't it? Don't be nervous because your breast is tender and painful - that is completely normal. I am actually 2 days past 6 years finishing radiotherapy and STILL sometimes mine can be painful if I lie on it the wrong way. When I had my last checkup after just over a year, I think it was, I mentioned to my BC nurse that it was still painful and she just said."it's normal" I have certainly learned that yes, it is normal. Not only do our breasts take a long time to recover from the surgery, the radiotherapy seems to have an impact.
I was 100% positive that it would be back on my first mammogram, just didn't believe otherwise. I was wanting to book a holiday, so the nurse at the time said to me "it's good news, book your holiday". However, since then they refuse point blank to give you the results there and then and you have to wait for the team to look at the mammogram. (I wonder if a nurse had said good news or vice versa and it was wrong once, so all procedure had to change). It can take a good couple of weeks to get the results and you will receive a letter in the post.
Again, I learned that if I saw an NHS letter and it was thin - it was good news before even opening it If there is a callback, then it would have a booklet in it.
The first one after treatment is the worst in my opinion, as it's all been so unknown for the last few months, but as the years go by you tend to build the trust back up in your own body not to let you down.
Hope this helps,
Kindest Wishes, Lesley
Thank you so much Lesley for your reassuring reply. The worst part will be the wait for the results I guess. Hopefully it will all be ok xx
