Is anyone taking supplements that were either recommended by medical staff or have chosen by yourself to take them to help boost health? I take magnesium, zinc, folic acid and Vit D3 all without checking with medical team…wondering if that now is stupid!
I take a few carefully chosen ones. You can find advice on integrative oncology charity websites like canceractive, Penny Brohn and yes to life. You can consult with a cancer nutritionist on Penny Brohn and find out about others in the supporters section of yes to life. There’s also info on some supplements on cancer research Uk too and other cancer charity websites. Maybe read around and see if any supplements alongside a good diet might help. I found a nutritionist really helpful in the recovery phase.
Thank you for the detailed reply zephyr! The reason I asked is that all my treatment finished a year ago and I suddenly discover a lump in mastectomy area and am now booked in for bone scan. Oncologist did ask me on Friday “is there anything you want to ask me?” And I forgot to ask about supplements! On reading about folic acid (as recommend by many GP) I’ve read that this can PROMOTE further cancer! Will follow your details above and will also send message to breast nurse. Kind regards and best wishes x
Hi I only take supplements that I’ve checked with my oncologist and I’m taking magnesium, zinc and D3 - the same as you. I also take evening primrose oil (Letrozole side effect life saver!) as he suggested plant based was better than any type of “manufactured” omegas. I don’t take folic acid because I hadn’t thought about it, so haven’t asked. But I have used the resources zephyr mentions and don’t recall anything major about it. Penny Brohn and the services they offer is an amazing resource, well worth taking advantage.
Sorry you have the stress of finding a lump and the head f**k that comes with that. Keeping everything crossed it’s something completely innocuous.
In the meantime…and I think you know the drill..stay away from Dr Google. He’s not the friend of anyone here.
Best wishes xx
Thank you so much for your detailed reply. My GP after blood test some months back told me to take folic acid, just buy from Holland & Barrest, he said! Have written a letter to oncologist re all the above and hope he at least emails/calls me! Appreciate you all taking time to respond! X
OMG I take the same as you guys and a few more into the bargin. But one of them is folic acid as advised by the GP.
Will look into the other ones I am also taking.
Do NOT panic! Always best to run supplements by your breast team in case they interfere with other drugs. My case is unique in thatGP suggested I was low in iron so told me to get folic acid. Stupidly I Googled it and boy! Are there a MILLION contractions!! Best check with breast nurses as we’re under their care for 5yrs after treatment xx
