Zoladex

I don't know if I'm in the right discussion for this - sorry if not! So i went for my 1st oncology appointment on Monday which was a nightmare - 2 and a half hour wait due to striking and emergencies and then a discussion that seemed to be over in the blink of an eye. Just for info its E+ 51mm invasive ductal breast cancer. Mastectomy done and on my 2nd infection! My oncologist was young and too bubbly for my liking and talked about my EC-P 2 weekly regime then she said steps after that would be tamoxifen and zoladex and would make me feel worse than the chemo. She just kept hammering the fact it would be really bad. My sister has to have zoladex injections as she has endometriosis and the effects are bad for her and she's on hrt. I'm really worried about having to take it but don't know if it's more that my oncologist could've had a better "bedside manner" instead of giggling with every sentence she said, or I'm frightened or just everything is finally getting on top of me. I'm just so upset and frustrated at the moment!

  • I was mid-40s when I started zoladex and it is an intense sudden menopause, but it really does get better. I got to the really manageable stage after about 6 months and now it's fine, 3 years after I first started taking it. I still get hot flushes and other sides effects, but nothing like they were at the beginning.

I don't think there's any getting away from the fact that a medical menopause is more intense than a natural one, but it is part of the treatment for hormone-positive BC and the alternative is far worse.

I also started my injections during chemo, so it was extra intense.

  • I've been having zoladex injections for about a year, along with letrozole and ibandronic acid. I have lots of side effects but they did start to settle down until recently. My Hot flushes have got worse again but i think that's more around the fact that my brand of letrozole has been changed again. One of the things I have really noticed is the joint pain but with exercise and ibuprofen it's a lot more manageable. I chose to take all the treatment i was offered and been slammed into the menopause was hard but you learn to manage the symptoms and hope that they settle down x

  • Thanks ladies. I have a history of anxiety and depression but have been off the antidepressants for nearly 2 years and I was managing my life really well until now I suppose. Think I need that extra bit help again although another minefied to walk is I took sertraline which isn't suitable for taking with tamoxifen...the joys!

Can’t answer re bedside manner but this is SO important when you’re feeling low. (I actually witnessed a stand up argument with a very rude nurse to a patient in a yashmak. We all said nothing but my heart went out to the patient as I believe it was a racist attitude on the part of the nurse….sorry, gone off track!!) wishing you best wishes for your onward journey xxx
