Hi all

could people help my technophob wife and share thier experiences with taking alendronic acid

she is type 2 diabetic, ashmatic and suffers from severe joint pains.

having read the leaflet inside the packet she can`t decide if taking it is a good idea.

any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi Pat, I take ibandronic acid, a very similar drug, and have rheumatoid arthritis so also have joint pain, I have no real side effects tbh. That said, I took Alendronic Acid about 10 years ago, for osteoporosis not BC and I had an increase in joint pain and came off it.  Maybe she can discuss ibandronic as an alternative? It had to be said that we can all react very differently to the same drugs so maybe she needs to try and see how she gets on? Hopefully others will come on and share their experiences too x

  • Hi  ,

as a fellow asthmatic who has been on Alendronic Acid for some years for mild osteoporosis, I understand. I knew that bone pain (and maybe consequently, joint pain) can be helped by Loratidine (I know, a strange use of an antihistamine!) I began taking that too, in the hope that anything can help. Actually I do have dust/mould/pollen problems so a daily antihistamine helps anyway.

I’ve also discovered that Lansoprazole can interfere with uptake of some of the minerals which can help with bone health. I was taking that daily, have now cut well down. Yes I do get indigestion, especially at night, but good old Gaviscon helps, plus having all food much earlier in the evening.

I hope that my next Dexa scan (in 2 years) will consequently show some improvement.

Hope that this helps your discussion with your wife? Oestrogen also has a big influence in joint health and so 5 years on an oestrogen reducing regime isn’t easy either!

    hugs xxx
