Pain in under arm with PICC line.

Hi all new to this forum so sending a big hello, love and best wishes to all.

I've just had round two of chemo (diagnosed in June) and had my PICC line inserted the day before my first round.

Just looking for advice from anyone else who has one. For a few days after chemo and sometimes randomly throughput the last two months I get pain in my underarm in the arm my line is is. Its like I've pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve and it hurts to lift my arm fully above my head.

Just wondering if anyone else has found this? Is it normal or if its something I should be really worried about.

Not really sure who I'd contact in my cancer team to ask such a question if I'm honest.

  • Hi, not sure who you should contact, I have had no problems and I have just had cycle 4, as it has to be flushed every week maybe mention it to the nurse then.

  • Maybe phone the chemo 24hr helpline, they may be able to advise.

  • Thank you. I had it flushed last on Friday and no issues or concerns then. But it's been aching over the last 2 days. I am seeing my nurse again Wed for bloods and a flush so I will ask.

    • I might very well just be sleeping funny and effectively "pulling" on a muscle but it's so hard to know what is normal or not when the side effects for both the chemo and all the meds I am on are so numerous and overlaping.
  • I agree with the others either call your red card team or speak to your team when you go on Wednesday

  • Thank you both.

The district nurse came yesterday and after a slow start managed to take bloods and then flush the line. She had a good look at my arm and says there is no other signs of blood clots etc. So she's happy the line is OK. She's suggested keeping a diary of when I get the pain as if its after the line has been used it may just be from that or from holding my arm funny during chemo etc Face palm tone2.

‍One to keep an eye on I guess.

  • Hello

I finished my chemo six weeks ago and had my picc removed.

When I first had it fitted it did feel odd sometimes but I always spoke to my chemo nurses but it was always fleeting with no ongoing pain, redness etc, so it never really needed further investigation.About a month before I finished I was experiencing some neuropathy in my thumb and first finger, that started going into my fore arm and some aching in the upper arm near my picc, along with by my armpit, again I spoke with the nurses and they in turn spoke with my consultant, who sent me for ultrasound, which showed nothing untoward up ans it went away.

I guess I'm suggesting that the best thing is to speak to your chemo suite, let them triage you give other symptoms and investigate if they need too!
