Disturbing reading….

  • Hi Tavares,

My name is Matthew and I work as part of the Online Community Team. We're the team who work on supporting our Online Community to make sure it stays safe and working well.

Thanks for starting a conversation about such an important topic. Incidentally, it is Menopause Awareness Month in October, and so Macmillan have put together a handy resource that deals with issues relating to the menopause and cancer. You can read it on our main website at the link below:

Regarding the article you mentioned, I think it’s important to keep in mind some context. While it’s good to see discussion around breast cancer and HRT being highlighted in the media, it is important to point out that the article itself is not a detailed summary of any data or scientific studies.

The article is a collection of short opinion pieces by one journalist, only one of which deals with the journalist’s thoughts on breast cancer and HRT. The journalist relates an anecdotal conversation with one GP they spoke to. That is not to say that their conversation is in any way invalid, but it doesn’t constitute solid medical advice that should cause anyone to immediately be concerned.

It is so important to have informed conversations with your healthcare professionals, and so it is always good to approach your own GP or cancer care team if you have any concerns regarding cancer and any medications you may be taking.

We have some online information on issues surrounding cancer risks, the menopause, and HRT at the links below:

Don’t forget you can also contact our Cancer Information Nurse Specialists to discuss any concerns you might have.

They can be reached by calling our Macmillan Support Line and then selecting the option to talk to a nurse. They’re available from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, on freephone 0808 808 00 00, by email or live webchat.

Alternatively, you can always post your medical questions on our Ask a Nurse forum, which is open Monday to Friday. A qualified Macmillan professional will then aim to reply within 1 to 3 working days.

I hope the above information is helpful, and thanks again for posting.

    All the best,
    Matthew
