Which type of bra should I wear after lumpectomy surgery? and when do I start wearing this post surgery bra? straight after the surgery or a few days after the surgery? and which size should I buy, my usual size is 36 b? and where can I buy it in London.

  • i found soft front close workout bra good

  • Hello Becacine. Im the same size as you and found a perfect bra in Sainsburys. It was good value and after 2 surgeries and lots of washing its still as supportive as when i first wore it. The one i bought has a zip opening on the front. I found this so much easier to put on and take off after my lumpectomies. I also bought 2 sports type bras from there which i like to wear to bed for extra support. These are seam free and are very supportive and comfortable.  They came in a twin pack.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your lumpectomy.

  • Hi  , I bought 2 Royce front opening bras (poppers) and was told to go up a size ie from 36b to 38b. I wore it straight after surgery, and also at night to begin with as I wanted to feel that everything was kept in place, if that makes sense. I also used loads of pillows for support and found I was best on my back (having always been a side sleeper). I used the bras for months afterwards as I found front fasteners easier until my arm felt more normal. But everyone is different so it’s a lot of ‘suck it and see’ for how things feel post op. I bought my first 2 Royce bras from a local shop which mainly does wigs but is so used to dealing with cancer patients that they started stocking and fitting post surgery bras. They’re also available in John Lewis (or were 5 years ago) and also online. But Sainsbury’s is definitely worth trying as I bet they’re more reasonably priced. Further down the line I wore crop tops at night and eventually nothing. But I didn’t want any ‘dangling’ for a good while!
Do you have a date for surgery yet?

  • You might get a free bra from your Macmillan nurses - I did. If not most major stores do a range of front fastening bras. And as they are classed as "medical equipment" you can get vat free so make sure you mention this at till.

  • The Consultants/Surgeons etc prefer if possible that you take in with you a 'front' fastening bar..... the nurses normally put this on you straight after the operation - then 'if' the Consultant/Surgeon needs to look at the lumpectomy site this can be done easily with bra being front opening (if this makes sense).

This works well if you haven't got my partner that gives the nurse 'my old faithful bra' that I had hide in my case.... whilst by new bra was on the bed with my clothes!!

I'm hoping this makes sense - only my mind says one thing and my fingers type whatever they like x
  • Hi Becacine, I'm so sorry to hear that you've had to 'join our club'.

I bought my post surgery bra online from Royce Lingerie. They had a decent selection and good advice regarding sizing. Your breast will be quite tender so you'll probably benefit from keeping it stable straight away, if you can.

Good luck. We're here for you xxx

  • Hi I had a lumpectomy a year ago and bought quite a few bras to try, some good and some awful, I was then told of a website called Woman Zone that specialise in post surgery bras and I tried one of their soft front close bras and I must say I have 6 now and haven’t worn another bra since lol, the most comfortable bras I ever had. They do swimwear and sports bras too. Hope this helps, good luck x

  • I bought M&S post surgery bras front fastening, I went up a size to make sure it wasn’t tight around my scar.  I also have a royse front fastener post surgery bra which is also good x
