Good morning Sun with face

Had lumpectomy yesterday and as a newbie I just wanted to say for those like me who are relatively new to this Breast Cancer club I can state that it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. I fully appreciate and understand that everyone's journey is different, my lumpectomy was a wire guided excision. For me the worst part was waiting as I am used to being on the go all day. Arrived at 7am to check in, wires inserted about midday at the Breast Care Unit, theatre at 3.30pm, recovery and then arrived home by 8pm. Felt totally drugged (in a nice way) all night, hardly slept yet I was comfortable. just had a nice cup of tea and now off to bed.

Like I said I know all journeys are different but hopefully my account of the day may help others. I have DCIS & LCIS

Things to take:

Good fitting front fastening bra, slippers , dressing gown & reading material, chargers for tablets/phones and download lots of different games to stem the boredom

Hope this helps and reassures anyone currently waiting.

Take care xxx

  • Great to hear your positivity Molly

I too recently (Wednesday) had lumpectomy (with mammoplasty) and like you say everyone is different, recovery is individual too.

I cannot believe I don't have any pain (only took 2 x painkillers the night after surgery and again on my 1st night at home).  I only feel a slight discomfort but oh boy DON'T accept any hugs from anyone HAHAHA.

Rightly or wrongly on my first day home I stayed totally in bed.  I'm not one for sitting around doing nothing and I knew if I did get up (even in pjs) I would be bound to do something so rather than risk it I decided to just stay put.  I'm lucky that I have an amazing other 1/2 who waited on my hand a foot.

Your things to take are spot on!

    All the best xx

  • Just wanted to check in with you. Was it ok today?  How are you feeling?

  • Hi

thanks for asking . It went well yesterday, wire insertion was not the best but I was home by 4.30 . I’m not in much pain, slept well and feel far more relaxed than I have done for weeks. I need to overcome fear because it was totally unfounded. The hospital staff in all departments were fantastic I couldn’t have asked for better care and support. I go back in a week for a checkup and then wait for results appointment which could be 2 to 3 weeks . Hugs xxx

  • Hi,                                                                                    wanted to know how you are feeling.                                  I've got appointment with doctor tomorrow, might then have some idea what's to come. Can relate to you for the fear factor. And I haven't even could an op date yet. Take care. Hugs xx

  • Hi Boro,

I’m feeling really good . My armpit and breast are  a little tender but nothing more. I’m not taking co codamol any more which I was given in hospital ( I took one yesterday morning). I started my exercises yesterday which are ok.  Had an afternoon nap which I don’t normally do . I think boredom will be a problem like others have mentioned. I work term time only so to have more time off isn’t great.

I go back to have wound checked maybe re dressed on Monday.  I hope you get on ok at the doctors today . Let me know how you get on .
    Big hugs Hugging x

  • Hi,   how are you feeling?     I have now got a date for the operation, it's 20th of this month.                             Met the doctor his seems nice. Was very straight to the point that I will have a scar and breast will be smaller.  Been given a small folder full of info, plenty of reading material.                                                                        Care nurse was brilliant talking of what's to come. I'm so scared.                  Hope all goes well with you in Monday. Get lots of rest.xx

  • Hi Boro

I’m really well thank you. Im glad you have met your doctor and have loads of information to read. Knowledge can be powerful but also scary. You will be fine with the operation . The worst bit for me was trying to get on the bed( I’m short) and then confirm my consent signature with no glasses on. I haven’t felt tired apart from operation day and feel a bit of a fraud being off work.
I now have an hospital appointment on 14th I assume this is for my results. I’m determined to keep feeling positive about the future as I said before I got into a bit of a state prior to my operation that did not help me or my blood pressure.
Make  sure you get some good bras I have some from Asda front fastening and some from m and s. Both are equally good. Lots of reading material or podcasts as there is a lot of waiting.

we have sunshine where I live so I’m enjoying that. Try and relax . Lots of hugs x

  • I’m also petite and bed transfers were very challenging and painful when following a DMX. In the hospital I found as bed on lowest setting was still too high for me.  Please consider referral to an occupational therapist who csn overcome difficulty with bed transfers with equipment. I had a Slidy kylie sheet prescribed to me which had satin on the base side which helped so much with bed transfers and positioning on the bed as it assisted me to turn on bed and position back onto bed much more easy. Hope this helps and best of luck x

  • Hello Leesland123.                                                    Thinking of you today, how are you feeling? How did the appointment go? Did you get your results?        Sorry for so many questions.                                          I'm anxiously waiting for my op on Wednesday next week.   Hoping all is well.  Big hugs x

  • Hi Boro

my appointment was cancelled yesterday as my test results were not back. The appointment is rearranged for next week.

im back at work this week as I’m feeling fine. I have full movement in my arm, still a little bruised and swollen but nothing more. Please ask questions I’m more than happy to answer, these chats have answered some of my questions.

I will be thinking of you next Wednesday, for me it was such a relief to have the operation my anxiety, lack of sleep etc reduced really quickly. X
