Tamoxifen & Menopause

Hi there,

I'm 51 and my periods stopped during my chemo treatment (Aug-Dec 2019) and haven't returned. I've been taking Tamoxifen since February 2020. I've read that Tamoxifen can cause periods to stop but not in every case. So at the moment, I'm thinking I am probably in menopause but then again, it could just be the result of the Tamoxifen. I mentioned to the GP about how will I know when I have gone through the menopause and she just said, "Well you won't really!"

I can't really say I'm having loads of symptoms, just a few hot flushes. I'm just wondering about how I know where I'm up to....all my friends are comparing notes on menopause and I just have to look blank!!! Laughing

Has anyone else had any advice about going through the menopause while on Tamoxifen? I'm thinking I might not know any more until I get my 5 year Tamoxifen review in 2025 and then have to decide whether medication continues and which way to go?

Thanks x

  • Hi I was 52 when I had chemo and my periods stopped after the 2nd round. I'm on tamoxifen and 18 months later no signs of period. I was told by my oncologist and breast nurse that you are assumed to be in menopause if you haven't had a period for 2 years.

  • I was menopausal when I was diagnosed but my periods ended the day after I got the you've got cancer news. So had finished before I went on tamafoxin. I did write a document for work about the menopause and what to expect. Not everyone will go through the same . I can send it to you if you want . It may help or not
