I had a mastectomy 2 weeks ago. My chest sounds like a hot water bottle and my stomach and abdomen ate bloated. It doesn't hurt but how long till it goes? It's very weird and unsettling.

  • Hi Sourdough

It can go on for a few days.  Your body should eventually absorb it, but if you can't wait that long contact your bcn and they can drain it for you.

  • Hi Sourdough - I had my mx two weeks ago too and I feel like I’m growing a new side boob. This feels very weird and uncomfortable. When I’m in a car it feels very odd every time we go over a lumpy piece of the road.  I’m off to the clinic on Tuesday to get my results back so I will see what they say about it. I hope it starts to settle for you as I hope it does for myself ! X

  • I'm just crossing my fingers it gets reabsorbed in a few weeks.

  • I had a large Seroma following lumpectomy and axillary clearance which was very uncomfortable.  They were reluctant to drain it because of the risk of infection, however, had the first drain done under ultrasound but it quickly refilled within a week and became even larger.  Felt like a 3rd breast under my arm.  It was drained a 2nd time 550mls was taken off.  It did start to fill again within a few days but started to slow down then gradually disappeared. I would say it took about 4 or  5 weeks.  Hope yours settles soon.

  • The general impression I'm getting is that don't get it drained unless it's really bad. The nurse took some off in the dressing clinic.  The pain wasn't worth it, cos it refilled.

  • I had mastectomy end of March and suffered greatly with Sedona on my back where they took skin etc from for reconstruction. I was having mine drained nearly every 7-10 days at its height, 200-300 mls nearly every time. I kept saying something was amiss and only at beginning of July did they say that it was also lymphoedema at the breast surgery site. Referred to breast pain Sister at local breast clinic and she has worked wonders with massage and swelling is reducing
