Skin and hair care

Hi everyone

So I start my chemotherapy treatment this Friday.  I've been told that the treatment will make my skin more sensitive and probably won't be able to use my usual products that I'm currently using.  Also I'm going to attempt the cold cap to try and save some of my hair if possible.  Would like some advice on skin and hair care products that are good for people whilst recieveing treatment xx

  • Hi, I found the creams that worked for me were from previous recommendations from this thread and were the Jennifer Young range ( specifically for those going through cancer and has website, I particularly loved the lip balm), MooGoo which you can get f from Holland and Barrett…they do a nice face cream and the Udderly smooth range for body cream (Amazon) and which I used alongside Aveeno when I had radiotherapy. These all worked well for me and had no issues. I stopped wearing make up when doing chemo as couldn’t be bothered and was so worried about losing eyelashes and eyebrows but they hung in there although my eyebrows are patchy now.  I lost my hair but followed the cancer care charity website and their recommendation and used a rosemary one to stimulate growth which worked well. Be careful of  strong fragrance as this can put you off your favourites when going through chemo. I don’t know if you have visited the Look Good Feel Good website but I did a few online workshops and they were really good and free! A great charity. Wishing you all the best with your treatment..be careful of the sun..I got burnt on face really quick last year when going through chemo. Xx

  • There are so many great products out there for you. I really enjoyed discovering new ones, gave me something positive to focus on. Definitely do the Look Good Feel Better workshop - in person you get such a wonderful care page of products.

other brands I found useful were Balmonds, Polybalm, and Altruist.

Balmonds. Love them. British company -with a story that mom came up with some formulas to help her child deal with extreme eczema. There is no perfume or junk in them and the product range really applies well to cancer treatment. Along with moisturisers they have a scalp treatment with Rosemaryy and a cooling balm I found useful-during radiotherapy

the other two lines are also British companies and created by oncologists.

Polybalm helps you retain your nails through chemo. Seems expensive at first but the two tubes lasted my whole chemo experience.

Altruist is suncream. There is a great tinted one I used as foundation/ and suncream. It reduces redness which was totally useful on the steroid days.

just keep moisturising twice a day and you come through this with great looking skin!

I cold capped but still lost a huge amount of hair after the second round. I kept at it as oncologist said it would help the hair grow back better. Sometimes I had to advocate for this as tue nurses weren't always keen to bother with my cap once I had so little hair. I persisted and had hair regrowth start during paclitaxel and a full head of hair by surgery.

    keep it up.

  • Thank you lovely, will take a look at the work shop and some of the products you have suggested xx

  • I have tried faith in nature shampoo and conditioner which have been great. Hair has started regrowing with docetaxel.

  • Perfect, thank you so much.  Appreciate your help xx

  • Hi I continued my usual make up and skincare routine and products. I probably did moisturise more. I did the cold cap for all 6 cycles and I bought the Paxman shampoo and conditioner but hated it. Horrible and a waste of £30. Stick to the Kerastase Genius Anti Hair Fall (pink) range! Good luck Fingers crossed

  • Thank you will have a look at the range you have suggested xx

  • You can get this on Amazon or Holland and barrett

  • I've carried on using my usual skincare products and find it lovely on my sensitive skin. Have a look at https://zoebeebeauty.co.uk/. They're all natural creams (and scrubs, face masks etc.) and I'll never use anything else on my skin now.
