I completed treatment last year and have an appointment to see the breast surgeon in July. I'm assuming my first yearly mammogram will be prior to that but haven't received a date for it as yet. Is it usual for patients to have their mammogram before their appointment with their surgeon?
Hi
I don't know if it's normal or not, and I suspect that each hospital does things slightly differently.
I was told that I'd get my first yearly mammogram a year after I'd had surgery and that's what happened. I had my lumpectomy last April and my first mammogram this April.
I don't have an appointment to see the surgeon but I do have appointments with my oncologist every 6 months to see how things are going. I finished chemotherapy and radiotherapy in December and January respectively and had my first chat with him in March with the next one due in September.

Hi, my mammograms and appointments to see the breast surgeon have never really tallied apart from the first year when the mammogram was supposed to be the following week, the surgeon sweet-talked the staff into getting it done at the same time. It’s really a double-check as your surgeon examines you carefully so it doesn’t necessarily need to be that you have the mammogram first. You’ll get notified of results as they will compare carefully with your previous one anyway.
I saw my surgeon in April (my 5 year discharge appointment) and she said the final mammogram might be as late as June or even July. But then I can request every three years myself after thst ( over 75)

Hi Latchbrook
Thanks for you reply and information. I'm discharged from oncology so this will be my first follow up appointment since completion of treatment. Hopefully I'll have had a mammogram prior to it.
Hi , as others have said, different areas may do things differently but in my case, I get my annual surgeon appointment around a year in advance, while the mammogram appointment comes through much closer to the actual appointment. So far I’ve always had the mammogram before the surgeon appointment and they’ve referred to it at the appointment. Xx
Wow! You’re very lucky to have such hands on attention! I have stage 3 and mastectomy and after being signed off all I’ve had was a recent mammogram. I’m not expecting to see/hear from anyone again! Maybe once you’re in the system they do keep you ‘in the loop’!
Hi
Like you, I don't see the breast surgeon again unless I have a problem and then I'd run it past my BCNS first. However, because I'm on 6 monthly Zometa, to protect my bones, my oncologist said he'd want to see me every 6 months.
Hi Movern
have you had your mammogram yet. I’ve not seen my surgeon since he gave me my pathology results last July. I had tele conversation with him in October. Don’t think it’s right after the first year to be just left
I had my first year one on the 18/05. But still awaiting results. It’s such a horrible time. The first mammogram x
