Hi everyone,
As a result of my breast cancer being genetic (familial, not any of the known genes), I opted to have a complete hysterectomy in 2019 to hopefully prevent any further reproductive cancers… 5 is enough, I’ve done my time!
I didn’t realise how this would affect different things, and I’m now prone to cystitis and water infections. The skin in my nether regions is now as fragile as tissue paper, cracks and bleeds at the drop of a hat and is a dry as a bone. I’m constantly smammed in either a water based gel call ‘Yes’ or Sudocrem, something I never thought I’d need!
One of my colleagues swears by D-Mannose effervescent tablets and has given me some to see if they help prevent the cystitis and infections.
However…there is always the fear that it’s not safe if you’ve had cancer. My tumours were mostly Triple Negative but with a couple faintly positive. I am only able to take one antibiotic at the moment as the chemo seems to have made me sensitive or allergic to most commonly used ones, so I’m trying not to have to resort to them.
if anyone has any guidance, I’d be most grateful.
Michelle
I don't know the answer to whether it's safe but I've been taking pure d-mannose in powdered form for years to keep cystitis at bay (it really does work). I had mentioned this before chemo to my oncologist and they didn't seem to think it was an issue. It is just a simple sugar - though not the kind that makes you put on wait and rot your teeth!
I swear by it. as a result of cancer treatment, my maintenance dose is twice a day - I tried to drop to once a day but started getting a UTI.
I seem to get UTIs when my body is strained, and you can increase the dosage if you feel one coming on - it works at eliminating it and you can mostly avoid antibiotics. I say mostly as I had a UTI soon after chemo that I needed ABs for, but I've not needed them since.
Thank you for that! I shall give it a go, I’m at my wits end with this xxx
