Loss of taste.

It's a week since my second session of EC and my sense of taste is starting to go. A lot of things, even water, seem to taste quite greasy. Does anyone have any tips on satisfying my appetite? as at the moment I seem to be overeating just to get that sense of satisfaction.  Thanks

  • Hi

I too lost my sense of taste for a while when having EC. I found that if I ate strong tasting foods like chilli and curry I could still taste the food. Also pineapple always tasted like pineapple so I'd have that for pudding and drink pineapple juice.

  • Thanks, pineapple's a good one. I've put lots of lemon things in my shopping basket but hadn't thought of this. Cheers

  • Thanks.  I've put lots of lemony things in my shopping basket but hadn't considered pineapple.  Great, cheers

  • Hello OsoAli

I also lost my sense of taste. It is worse during the chemo week where I can’t taste anything at all. So I add a lot of lemon/ vinegar/ sweet chilli sauce/salt/vinaigrette/soy sauce to taste and enjoy food. However after this week I begin to taste only the natural flavour but slightly of carrots, green peas, sweet corn, pineapple, orange/tangerine/satsuma., beetroot.
I also feel hungry most of the time after my third cycle of AC and it is concerning me because I consider it overeating. I must eat though because I start shaking if I don’t. Another concern is the increased amount of sugar and salt.. I happen to go into Maggie’s, a charity supporting people with cancer and they actually offer a diet and Nutrition workshop in May. Also mentioned LifeKitchen by Ryan Riley who creates recipes for people who lost their sense of taste. Check this out.

  • Some great advice, thanks Winx I'll look those up Thumbsup

  • Hi Osoali

I too have lost my sense of taste but am the opposite and can’t bring myself to eat, did your sense of taste return? Or did you find anything that doesn’t taste foul or greasy?

    Take care

  • It did come back after about 4 or 5 days, back to normal, so didn't really get chance to test out the suggestions from other posters. I'm expecting it to go again after my next round,  so I have pineapple at the ready!

Fingers crossedyou get yours back soon.

    Take care

  • Thanks OsoAli. It’s not back yet and at day 12, hopefully it will return for a few days before my next session x

  • Hi OsoAli

I lost my sense of taste and had mouth ulcers so could not taste anything, eat anything spicey or harsh e.g. toast.  In the end my husband brought me soups, very soft bread rolls and lots of puddings to have with custard or ice cream.  I found apple juice soothing, it took a while but your senses will come back,  try and hand in there.
