Hi all , I’m booked in for a single mastectomy this month but found out yesterday that I’m eastrogen negative.. is anyone else been in a similar position?is this a bad thing ? Also can anyone please tell me possible further treatment after the masectomy… ie : good or bad news on the test result post op .. many thanks x

  • In May 2015 age 51 I was recalled from my first rountine screening mammogram for 2 areas of calcification (10mm & 5mm).   I was diagnosed with intermediate DCIS in the 10mm area only.  The smaller area was benign.  I had a WLE in July and 15 sessions of radiotherapy in September.  11mm high grade DCIS was final diagnosis after surgery.   I didn't require hormone tablets and almost 8 years later I just have 3 yearly screening.

  • Thank you for your reply , it’s much appreciated, what does WLE stand for please? and you’ve given me some hope so thank you x

  • I’ve just realised it’s wide local incision x

  • Sorry I should have said lumpectomy as that's what many know as.

  • After your mastectomy they will biopsy the tissue to decide next course of treatment if any.  I think I had my results after 10 days and 15 sessions of radio recommended but after mastectomy it might just be annual mammogram for 5 years.  How large an area affected?  I have G cup breasts so they thought they thought they could get good cosmetic result with WLE.  I'll tag   as I think she had mastectomy only x

  • Hi
is correct I had single Masectomy if you click on my name you can read my story on my profile which takes you thru my treatment plan .

We all are different and so are our cancers so plans can differ quite a bit .
The hormone neg or pos result is important for you treatment plan here is a link that explains it

    www.cancer.org/.../breast-cancer-hormone-receptor-status.html

I was diagnosed in 2019   Two areas of calcification added together 50mm

My  BC was hormone negative so prior to MX was told unlikely to need chemo . At results appointment I was told MX successful with clear margins and nodes all clear

Then the news that my BC was HER 2 POS  again this is a protein than can attach to cancer cell causing rapid growth . Consequently had to have 6 cycles of chemo followed by A drug called Herceptin given by injection for 1 yr  this reduces the risk of recurrence . Also had a bone strengthening infusion for three year .

I know all of the above sounds horrifying I  know I was , but it passes far quicker than you think I was signed off by onco last Monday 4yr  9 month after MX so it can be done .

Chemo can be rough but it is doable and makes the rest feel relatively easy Joy

As I said at the start we are all different and your plan could bear little or no resemblance to mine .

My plan was a consequence of being Her 2 pos had it been negative then no Herceptin needed

hope this helps  take care ask any questions there’s always someone ready to help

  • Hi carol , there were 2 areas of calculation I have no idea on the size , I only had one area biopsied then decided myself on the masectomy rather than wait to have the other area biopsied .. my breasts are only A cup so small .. thank you for your kind message x

  • Hi Margaret, and thank you for your kind message, I’m just not coping with any of this very well whatsoever.. everyone else seems so strong in their fight .. I’m frightened and trying desperately to keep calm and cross one bridge at at time but feel I’m falling to pieces.. x

  • Hi   it’s so difficult but believe me when I say that this is the worst time the waiting for for things to happen once you have your results and know your plan it feels so much better . Hard to believe that starting treatment can make you feel less scared but it does because you can focus on the now then take next step .
let the tears flow if that helps this forum will help you so much .take a browse around Gp the threads and also read peoples profile stories you will see we all have the same fears but it helps to share with others on here
