One year after radiotherapy my boob has shrunken and gone rock hard.  I was recently at 1st year check up and asked consultant about this but all she said was it’s because of the radiotherapy.

Has this happened to anyone else and does it stay like this?

    1. Hi Griffon. Did you have any reconstructive surgery before radiotherapy? xx J
  • Hi Jagu

I had 2 DCI’s as needed to remove further tissue followed by 1 weeks radiotherapy

I had mastectomy on left side and after 15 RT ending in Sept 2022 my ribs and muscles are rock hard. Have been told this could last a couple of years! It’s sometimes uncomfortable when I turn to that side in bed but I guess it’s the price we pay to get rid of the disease! I massage with cream twice a day but makes little difference! I wish you well xx

  • I’m nearly 3 years after right mastectomy with immediate implant then radiotherapy.  All was well initially now over the past year the implant boob is rock hard, lumpy and I get awful pains in it - especially during the night.  The skin has become very thin, bruised looking and seems about to split.  I have two choices - either a DIEP flap (one year wait) or double mastectomy and stay flat.  Leaning more to going flat as DIEP is huge op and long recovery plus I am so uncomfortable I want to get the “thing” off right now!!!

    Just keep going!
  • Kitz I’ve just had my implant replaced after radiotherapy - still recovering xx

  • I can’t have a replacement implant as the skin is completely ruined!  I hope your recovery is swift.  Honestly what we have to go through!

  • I’m so sorry.  My new one feels tight I hope it gets better xxxJ

  • I’m sure yours will be fine now as you don’t have any radiotherapy to damage it.  Bound to feel a bit tight initially probs due to bruising etc but will soon settle down  x

    Just keep going!
  • My boob has gone red and hot again 4 mths after radiotherapy finished. Is this normal? I'm not a worrier if I know something is within the parameters of what others get . I'll check in with someone if it continues. Haven't got my usual creams etc because I'm away at pres. X
