Ok, silly question but... Soon to go through airport security. First holiday since mastectomy, in fact since COVID... They sometimes do those whole body scans... Can everyone see the resulting picture? Does the falsie show? What about if you get frisked.... Can they tell? Do they ask questions? Had anyone got any experiences to share. I just need to prepare mentally so I can cope with all eventualities. Thank you.
Hi Iblodwin
It's not a silly question and I hope you have a great holiday!
If I can reassure you a bit, I haven't had a mastectomy, but I have a badly damaged leg (which even a nurse gasped breath in at when she saw it, after I'd forgotten to warn her! - I had a motorbike accident and it was degloved and muscle transplanted from the back to the front, scarred from knee to ankle etc). If you set off the alarm, you go through the scanner. No-one else sees anything. You stand there and I don't even know where the picture appears as I've never seen a screen. I always then get frisked and I just let the 'frisker' know that my leg will be different because it's badly injured.
I have only ever had supportive comments from the airport security. And since being diagnosed with BC just over 5 years ago, I've travelled to so many countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Borneo, Costa Rica to name a few and in Peru they were so lovely they even let me take a bottle of perfume (much too large on the hand luggage amount!) that I'd forgotten to pack in the main case and we even had a laugh with me trying to explain by hand signals about what it was!
If you set off the scanner, just quietly mention to your frisker that you've had a mastectomy and they'll be fine.
I hope this helps
Kindest wishes, Lesley
Thanks Lesley, that's reassuring. I appreciate your response. Take care.
If it’s any comfort, hubs had his first hip replacement aged 47 and was going to say, ‘if you find it, you can have it’ when going through an airport scanner; but titanium doesn’t show up! (I suspect he was a touch disappointed!) If they see anything, just quietly explain you’ve had an mx and they will be fine I’m sure.

Not had my op yet but travelled last week. your falsie would probably show on scan but don’t think they would question it. It’s not metal or organic material. I traveled with “chicken fillets” in before and never been questioned. When frisking they never touch boobs them selves just down the sides, around the band and down the breast bone. Unsure where you are upto in your BC journey however contact airline as most give extra 3 kilos luggage for medical items (ryanair do this as sep cabin bag). For me I used this for my prescription meds, headscarves, wig. I was also able to take a large bottle (more than 100ml) of moisturising cream through security by showing the prescription.
Hope you enjoy your holiday
