Has anyone taken these supplements. I have low energy and generally feel unwell. I had surgery in March and radiotherphy in June. I am on tamoxifen and citalopram. I did a check online where I bought them, just want to make sure they are ok to take.
I returned to work full time in august. When I come home I’m exhausted. My work isn’t physically demanding.
Best to check with your oncologist, via the oncology nurse. Some drugs do not mix well with certain supplements, and while with some drugs it's a blanket "No," with some it's a question of quantities and combination, so only the clinician and the oncology pharmacist who know your exact history and prescription can give a definite answer. If you are unable to get hold of them, then as Tavares suggested, talk to Macmillan, who would likely know the general guidelines for each drug.
Hi Babesintheboob , sorry to hear you have ongoing low energy and generally feeling unwell. I’m on Anastrozole rather than tamoxifen but have similar issues, due I think to the low oestrogen levels (hopefully) resulting from the medication. I find the ongoing fatigue to be the biggest problem, but am no longer struggling with work as I was fortunate to be able to retire earlier than planned. But I know that’s not an option or desirable for most folk here. Exercise is my salvation, mainly walking, but again I can indulge freely as I’m not working. Big hugs to you for coping with work, and even if it’s not physically demanding, I found the brain fog that often accompanies hormone therapy made concentrating at work as big a struggle as the physical demands (I was a special needs teacher).
Re supplements - I’d echo the comments above re seeking guidance. I used to take various supplements especially to deal with menopausal symptoms but I’m wary of them now, as although I kind of hate the Anastrozole, I do want it to do its job and hopefully keep the beast at bay. I now only take calcium and vitamin D, as recommended by my GP, as I have osteopenia, to counteract the bone thinning effects of my drug. But that’s not a problem with tamoxifen. What I did find really helpful was ear acupuncture which I had at the Maggie’s centre at Addenbrookes. It was aimed at the hot flushes but it seemed to help ‘all round’ as I certainly felt less anxious after several sessions. That was pre lockdown so I might see if I can have a ‘top up’ course as I think the benefits do wear off.
Have you looked on the Penny Brohn website? I find a lot of their info really useful.
Good luck with it all and I hope you can get some definite advice soon. Love and hugs, HFxx
Hi again, meant to add these screenshots re red clover. I can’t vouch for the sources and obviously some organisations are more critical of supplements than others, but worth a read at least. Xxx
